R40 Memory Upgrade

#1 Post by deraj » Wed Feb 07, 2007 12:11 am

I have a Thinkpad R40, 2722-CU4, with an Intel Pentium M 1.3 GHz processor.

I currently have two 256 MB SDRAM DDR PC2100 (266 MHz) RAM cards, in 200-pin SO-DIMM slots.

I want to install a 1GB card - I was wondering if I have to use PC2100 (266 MHz) cards, or can I change, for example, to a PC3200 card, or a 400 MHz card?

Thanks.

You can use PC2100, PC2700 or PC3200. The R40 has the same chipset as the T30, which has been reported to use PC3200 sticks just fine in this thread. Keep in mind though, PC2700 and PC3200 sticks won't speed up the machine.

I have PC2700 RAM in my R40 model 2723 (Pentium-M). I expect PC3200 will be fine.

The 2722 and 2723 R40s have the Intel 855 chipset, unlike the Pentium 4-M based R40s. You might be lucky and have a revision that can be tweaked to run at PC2700 speeds, but that's a whole different topic.

My bad! I didn't read the OP's post carefully. But the answer remains the same: Yes, the Pentium-M R40 can use PC3200 sticks too, because it has the same chipset as the T40 which can use PC3200 according to this thread.
