Is an AVR enough?

Is an AVR enough to protect a computer or is buying a UPS the only way to go?

A UPS for a laptop? That's stupid. Or are we talking about desktops?

I think you meant to say something else, didn't you? Something more in keeping with the Rules of the Road?

People - When we post a question, please consider that readers will not know what you are talking about unless the question is reasonably phrased. Whether English is your native tongue or not, acronymns are always problematic. Please don't use them, at least not much.

I don't know what an AVR is.

I think of a UPS as being an Uninterruptible Power Supply. So in a ThinkPad topic ("Z"), a UPS is unnecessary.

Okay, to me an AVR, or automatic voltage regulator, is the same thing as a "line conditioner." I have one for my vintage travel trailer because some of the older RV parks have really lousy electrical systems.

To answer the question, I suppose if you need to use the laptop in a place where the power is questionable, like with frequent brownouts, it could not hurt. American Power Conversion (apc.com) makes a couple that are sized correctly for a small PC, and they are not very expensive.

I sort of think my laptop has its own uninterruptable power supply.

:D However, I do have one for my home office PC - it's there to allow time to shut down the system if the power fails.

Actually I think I am off. I was supposed to post this on another forum. But with all the tabs that I made in Firefox, I guess I got confused.

My apologies.
