T43 replace screen

#1 Post by equinoxe » Thu Feb 08, 2007 12:20 pm

I have a T42P with a superb UXGA screen (but no superb videochip) and I have a T43 with a XGA screen (but with a superb videochip). Both screens are 15 inch.
Can I replace the XGA screen from my T43 with the UXGA screen of my T42P and vica versa please ?
Or is this an impossible thing to do ? And if it is possible, how to do it ?
Who can give me advice please ?

Yes, you can swap the tops of the two notebooks. Swap the entire top; do not disassemble the tops and try to swap the LCD panels. By the way, the LCD cables are different between the two, so if you do swap just the panels, keep the original LCD cable with each panel.

Note: Bluetooth (BT) antenna is in the LCD case, so if one machine has BT and the other does not, then you will not have an LCD antenna in the BT machine after you swap the tops.

The "clear plate" (the plastic strip with the icons and the machine "name", on the bottom of the LCD display) is a stick-on decal which you can remove carefully, and swap between the two tops if you want the "names" of the machines (T42p vs. T43) to match the machines.

The two notebooks have identical construction, so disassembly and reassembly will be the same. The instructions for removing the keyboard, keyboard bezel, and LCD from the base are in the Hardware Maintenance Manual, page 120:

Good luck!

Thank you for the explanation. Looked at the pdf file, seems not so hard to do it. Will try it this weekend, let you know if I succeeded.
If anyone still has a good advice, do not hesitate to tell me.
Much appreciated!

What's the superb and non-superb video chips you have, by the way?

Ditto on that qustion.

Unless the T43 miraculously had a V3200, it would be slightly faster than T2, unless he has a radeon 7500 in the T42P by mistake. Even the T2 is faster than the X300 in a lot of tests (but not all).

I wouldn't risk swapping displays either, unless they're both out of warranty. Yes it seems straightforward and easy, but accidents does happen. But good luck :)
