Updating the BIOS in an Thinkpad 760ed

#1 Post by Claes » Thu Feb 08, 2007 1:54 pm

Hi,
Some background:
Running Win98.
I have an TP 760ed to which I want to use a 32 bit Cardbus Ethernet card in one of the PCMCIA-slots to be able to connect to a LAN.

I have installed the card and got the following information when looking in the Device Mananger/Network adapters/Cardbus 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter II.

"The adapter is disabled because the BIOS for the device did not give it an IRQ. Code 29.
You must enable the device in the BIOS."

Question one: How to do this? I have tried the Easy Set-up" program but it doesn´t give me the possibillity.

When looking at the Recourse tab there are no conflicting devices.
But when opening the "Set configuration Manually" button i get the following conflicting list:
"Input/output range 0000-00FF" used by Programmable interrupt controller.
Input/output range 0000-00FF" used by Motherboard resourses

I have downloaded the latest BIOS to a diskette but here my problem is that I do not have a diskette station to use in my TP.

Question two:
Can I, as I already have done, copy the files from the diskette to a CD and run an upgrade from the CD in my TP without any special action?

Question three:
Can I handle this conflict and are there someone that can give me any idea about how to go on?

I think you might have more luck with this question in the Legacy Hardware forum.

Pcmcia issues are covered in several threads, such as

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... cmcia+card

I am running WIN98SE and have no problem using either a wireless card or a USB card in my PCMCIA slots.

Have you enabled PC Card slots in the Thinkpad Config utility?

Hi ms5133,
Thanks for your answer.
I have looked into your references but are still a little confused
about the Thikpad Config utility that you are refferring to .
Do you mean the Easy Set.up program that are delivered with the TP or is it another program?

See this link

http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.ws ... MANBD.html

Once installed ,open the program and check the little dot under the PC Card option..this should enable the PCI slot.

FYI, there is a sticky at the head of this thread that has much usefull info for legacy machines like our 760's.

Hi,
Thanks again.
I have now installed the TP utility program and can now see the IRQ enabeling possibility as well as the setting for the IRQ.

My problem is that I can not "tick" the enabelling and the IRQ info is "grayed" out.

When looking at the "PC Cardbus" button I am told that the card is installed in "socket 3". ( The PC is not docked).

When looking at the "Global settings" the "Automatic settings" is ticked and the Start address is 000C000 to 00FFFFFF.

When looking at the Device Manager\General tab I still am told to enable the IRQ

When looking in the Device Manager\Resources tab\Set configuration manually button I am told that the Input/Output range is 0000 to 00FF and that this memory area is used by the "Programmable interrupt controller" as well as by "Motherboard resources"

I am not sure about how to handle this. Can you give me some idea?

Thanks for your help.
