Onecare or Avast??

#1 Post by buddypad » Thu Feb 08, 2007 5:58 pm

Hello! What are your opinions about Avast and Live Onecare for protecting a Vista-System? Which one is better? Do you prefer one of the two? If yes, why? For me it is important that the SW doesn't block much resources and that it works well with the system. I don't care so much about the topic, that Onecare costs money and Avast is available for free (Onecare is not an expensive tool).

OneCare is actually pretty good and the cost is negligible if you have multiple computers as most people do. The licensing for OneCare allows you to install on upto 3 computers for the same price of about $30. My experience with it has been the Beta software and it was pretty low on resource usage.

I have been using Avast Home Edition under Vista for about 3 weeks now and am satisfied with the performance. It seems to use a little bit more resources than OneCare, but not enough to make a significant difference.

Another good one to consider is AVG Free Edition. Have been using that on Vista on a desktop since November and have never had a problem. It does not look very pretty, but it does a decent job. And who cares if an anti-virus program looks pretty or not?

Stay away from Symantec though! Its a resource hog. CA is better, so is McAfee...but they all cost money! NOD32 is another good one, but is not free...it uses very little resources from what I've heard and read. Never used it though...

My preferences in order:

- OneCare
- Avast
- AVG Free Edition

Hope this helps...

Thx for the detailed answer. But what about OneCare and Virus-Checking - I heard it doesn't check incoming mails directly? The SW checks them, when you open the attachment.... And what about Instand-Messaging? Avast is checking that too I read! Don't know if it is true?!

Recently there was a discussion that OneCare faild VB100 test. MS is investigating on this problem.

Personally i'm using OneCare since beta on my vista install and happy with it. Secondly you could give NIS2007 a try. It's not that bad like it was some versions ago.

But what about the future? Will Onecare develop itself to be a good software? That's the big question....

Crazy that SW like Avast is already doing it quite well with Vista and OneCare has problems with it...

$19.95 if you take up the "special offer for Vista users" that comes up when you get the Vista security centre to tell you what Anti-virus stuff is available. CA also a 3 system package deal of some sort for a few more $ that get you extra stuff.

Cheers,

Bill

I don't know what you mean by "crazy" but I have Onecare running on 6 Vista machines and it does great. I don't know if Avast is "better" becuase I have not used it before. Personally I'd like to see Onecare add more flexibility to the firewall portion (like more port opening wizards) and the Tuneup function, but overall I am extremely happy with it.

I downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials for my XP Pro Virtual Machine and it seems to work very well. On my real machines, I use Symantec Corporate Client Security and Endpoint Protection. These products work very well, and are in no way "resource hogs" as one poster claimed. .... JDH

Symantec's corporate offerings are different from the consumer ones, that's why you see some people claiming Symantec's are resource hogs while others say that they're lean and fit.

Back to the topic, I now recommend others to use MSE instead of other free AV solutions for a number of reasons. I especially like that MSE's clean interface.

Cheers.
