Change WinXP log on screen to Classic Theme

Hi,

This isn't really a Thinkpad-related question (purely aesthetic), but I thought maybe someone here would know.

I like running the Classic theme on Windows XP. But the one thing I can't change from the XP theme to Classic on the Log On screen.

Here is a picture of what XP currently looks like (upper) and what I want it to look like (lower). Basically, I want it to be "Classic" themed, resembling Win 2k/NT.

I know it is possible since I have seen several corporate SOEs that do it, but I have never had the desire to look into how to do it for my own systems.

Looking at the available options in the XP group policy editor is probably a good starting point. Type "gpedit.msc" in the Start menu 'Run' box.

This may not be the ideal way to do it, but if you modify the "Default User" theme in the registry, that affects the login box as well. I made a set of reg files that modify these settings to various different styles I've used. There is also a reg file that should restore the original settings. Even though this shouldn't harm anything, I would either backup the registry trees manually or just have a system restore point in case. In all the time I used these I never had a problem, but I haven't used them in quite a while. If nothing else, this should be a good starting point for you.

What you want to do is requires a registry hack. Open the Registry editor by entering "regedit" in the run prompt from the start menu. Now use the following information from here to change the need values. BE CAREFUL. I strongly suggest you make a working backup of your registry before doing any editing to it. One wrong mistake WILL mess up your system.

Copy & paste this in a txt file, and then save to whatever you may like like this "<filename>.reg". Then save it to desktop, double-click it, select Yes and you'll have windows 2000 logon style in xp:

Okay, I didn't ask the question properly. What I really wanted to ask was, how did he know what parameters to modify? Did it take a long time to figure out?
