Intel 2915ABG (was:3945ABG) in a Thinkpad T42?

#1 Post by northyen.dk » Fri Feb 09, 2007 3:14 pm

'Ello!

I'm just about to buy a Intel 3945ABG mini-PCI, to replace the very slow 2100 3B, I'm currently using. The part number, which I believe is the correct one, is 41N3009. But I want to be very sure, so can I use that part number in my T42? Will it work, or does it need some convincing?

The T42 version I have, is a 2373-8XG- lovely one I might add.

For a T4x you need an Intel 2915ABG card, the 3945ABG is a different form factor/interface which fits in a T6x but it won't fit in a T4x.

Make sure you get an IBM/Levono OEM version of the 2915ABG card!

Cheers,

Bill

Arf! That bugs me a bundle, as the Lenovo 2915ABG is exceedingly expensive here (about 150 USD in total, danish retailers).

Instead, I can grab the 'Intel version' of the 2915ABG, and only spend about 40 USD. Of course, then I would have to patch out the error, but the CMOS method looks exceedingly easy.

Any thoughts on that route?

Edit: Alternatively, I can go the eBay route, and buy the IBM version of the 2915ABG. The FRU is 93P4239.

Now I live in EU, will this pose any problems? From what I know, the only difference seems to be the two extra channels for usage here in EU?

Just use the Intel-branded card and the no-1802.com app (runs from DOS). I just did it to make an Intel 2915ABG work and it took maybe 5 minutes once I found the app and threw it on something dos bootable (I have a USB key with DOS on it so that was easy.)

Good news everyone!

I ordered the generic Intel 2915ABG, applied the no-1802 trick, and had the card work without any issues so far. So good stuff.

The only thing that boggles me head is that during the BIOS part of the boot, there is now an Intel logo in the right top corner. What used to be there, and how come the new Intel ogo popped up?

That logo pops up when you have all of the components necessary for the laptop to be classified as a Centrino machine (chipset, processor, and wireless card.)
