T40 don't boot

#1 Post by donpoon » Sat Feb 10, 2007 7:00 pm

I am a new Thinkpad user. Just bought a certified used T40(2374) 1.5 GHz 256M 40G from IBM. Plan to use it for Linux. Has been dual boot with WinXP SP2, Unbuntu 6.10. Preserved the Recovery partition. Upgraded the internal Wifi with Atheros chip using the No-1802 hack. With the aids of online guides and forum post, everything run smoothly

Until last night, I could not stand the fan plusing noise and found that upgrading the BIOS helps. I upgrade the BIOS to 3.21 and the Embedded Controller Program to 3.04. Things were fine and I can boot to both XP and Ubuntu. Just before I was about to call for the day. I close the lid while I was in Ubuntu. I didn't carefully configure the Close-Lid behaviour. Don't know if it was trying to hibernate or suspend but the T40 has been acting weired since then.

If I boot normally to WinXP. It will shutdown by itself once I get to the login screen. After that a turn off/on cycle is required but it does not get to the BIOS splash screen at all. Even the CD tray refuse to open at this stage. I will have to remove the battery and unplug the power for a while before I can get back to the BIOS flash screen. And I will get back to the login screen and auto shutdown.

Booting in Ubuntu has similar symptom. The machine just shutdown while the OS loading. I tried booting from the Unbuntu Live CD with no luck. Even the IBM recovery partition does not work anymore.

The only thing works is booting into Windows Safe Mode.

It does not work if I boot into Windows Safe Mode with Network.

It does not work when I try MSConfig and disable all drivers and startup programs.

I try to list out as much details as possible. Hopefully it's not too confusing. I am trying to contact IBM support and hopfully can get a set of recovery CD's during the weekday. Hopefully the recovery CD's will work as recovering from recovery partition doesn't work.

Wonder if members here seen something similar so that I can fix it in an easier way.
