Display issues after replacing mainboard of A21m...

#1 Post by basil1211 » Sun Feb 11, 2007 1:28 pm

Hello All...

I was given a Thinkpad A21m that was working great until the mainboard went bad. It remained in my office for a 2 1/2 year until I left to start a new job. I recently ordered a new mainboard on Ebay and installed it a few weeks ago. The mainboard installation went well but know I am having a strange display issue. If I use an external display the laptop works great and I was able to install the OS.

Basically the display locks and see something similar to this when mounted…

Image

If I slightly twist (flex) the display from the bottom while mounted it looks great…

Image

If I take the display out of the mounting and let it sit on its own the image comes back alive. It looks lite and grainy but it works.

As soon as a place the LCD back into the mounting area it goes bad again. As soon as metal touches metal.

I do not think it is a cable. Maybe the display but not sure.

So strange how a small twist brings it alive.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks…

MCA

I may have found something. Please excuse the poor photos...

As mentioned the display seems to work with but very light when not mounted...

If I hold the upper left hand side of the display and slightly touch the backside with my finger tip I can get the problem to occur...

and it progesses...

Looks like the display is bad. [censored].

What do you think?

I have an A30 with the same issue. On mine, the problem is with the screen; I've determined this because the problem persists when I connect it to my T21.

Can you fiddle and move the cable around without anything happening? Or does this happen easier when you fiddle with the LCD itself? If it's the latter, then the display might have some bad wiring inside it.
