PC2-4200 memory in T42?

#1 Post by sergejm » Sun Feb 11, 2007 4:50 pm

T42 is supposed to have PC2700 type memory, but is it compatible with PC2-4200 memory?

i am rookie here, but , still don't think so.

533 is the frequency for t43 motherboard, and that's the DDR2.

No. DDR2 RAM and DDR RAM are physically incompatible and won't fit in the same slots.

On the same note: If the t42 735 has a fsb of 400, why can't pc3200, which is ddr not ddr2, be used? or am I reading the numbers wrong

You probably could use that, however I doubt it would run at that speed in a T42. Most probably it would default backwards to PC2700

400MHz-PC3200 can be used.

Some BIOSs check for exact speed match and give warning if the memory strip identifies itself (via the SPD chip on the memory strip) as anything other than the specification the BIOS expects. However, faster memory can (almost) always be used where slower memory is expected. PC3200/PC2700/PC2100 denote decreasing speed specifications for the DDR memory standard, all with the same physical specs.

sure you can add a pc3200 memory, it runs.

but here's the deal:
1. most pc3200 has CL3.0 and pc2700 has CL2.5 which is better.
2. PC3200 needs about 0.1v more voltage, so you may have to adjust the voltage.

But PC3200 modules can be used on PC3200 laptops while PC2700 modules can't be. In other words, if you sell your PC2700 machine and upgrade to a PC3200 one, you won't have to buy new modules if you already have PC3200 ones.

which, while true, would imply an upgrade from a machine using one sort of obsolete memory to another machine using another sort of obsolete memory . . . . .this would be an upgrade on the scale of deciding to move up to meatloaf from, um, hamburger

How about PC-4200 DDR RAM? As in T43 RAM in the T42/T41. Can 4200 DDR be used instead of PC2700? I am seeing it much cheaper is why. $20 for 2x1GB PC4200. Can anyone point to same or cheaper PC2700? How about in volume? Thanks.

ahh PC2 4200. Mmmok.

Well, then can we put PC5300 DDR2 into a T43?

Yes, T43/p runs fine with PC2-5300.

It's physically impossible to insert DDR2 RAM in a DDR1 slot without damage...so PC2-4200 stays with the last generation of T4x/R5x units...and not the earlier ones.

Is the chip pattern e.g. 8x32 important?
