#1 Post by Lmax » Thu May 20, 2004 12:25 am

I know many people's hard drives crashed when the T41 came out but then IBM updated the firmware and gave the download for everyone which I have. I was just wondering if you ordered a T41 today if IBM has fixed this issue in the latest shipping ones. I would think new ThinkPads come shipped with the latest BIOS and firmware on all the parts. Is this right to assume if you buy direct from IBM?

Yes, the newest T41's from IBM come with the latest BIOS and firmware. But the hard drive preload is the same.

i think the T41's and R50p's sold after the end of february had the fix..

it was a bug in the firmware of the 60gig 7200 RPM drive and the active protection system which together could crash the HDD..

it is always best to check the firmware on any 60gig 7200RPM drive in your possession..

Mine had the fix (indicated by a blue paint dot on the box) - but still, there was an even newer firmware on the IBM site. But it's no biggie, you can easily flash it yourself wit h the software.

Bill, excuse me for my ignorance but how does one go about checking what firmware version you have? Also, I am about to get my new T41p, hopefully tomarrow, and I wanna check the HD firmware right away as it is the 60gig 7200rpm one.

Also what is the exact version number of the latest firmware for that drive?

Thanks,
Max

check firmware rev. by trying firmware update..
if it takes then it was needed..
if not then not needed..

Lmax,

The file diskinfo.exe listed here should tell you if you need the upgrade or not.

I am resurrecting an old thread here, but...
Am I to guess from what was written here that T42's were not affected by this old drive firmware??

Here is my issue:
I have a new 2378FVU, and I am installing a 60GB 7200rpm Hitachi that is 1+ years old that has been "sitting around" in another notebook, and did not come from IBM.
Should I check and update this drive's firmware, or leave it alone?
I have clean installed a fresh copy of XP, and have not yet installed Active Protection.

Please advise!!

Thanks,
Andrew

So...
There is NO reason to update the firmware on an old 7200rpm Hitachi if it is being used in a new Thinkpad, correct???

well, there was an interaction between the HDD active protection system on the early T41p/R50p and the 60gig 7200rpm drive firmware which would crash the HDD at unpredictable times..
update either the firmware or the APS software and the problem goes away..
the next preload and subsequent firmware releases on the 60gig fixed the problem..
either would also fix the problem..

Kindof sounds like there is no real knowledge of what an old drive would do with a new T42, since IBM doesn't ship the combination.
Thanks,
