edited to say that I figured out that the driver is from Microsoft and went to the microsoft site, but could not find anything. The only thing I did last week before this drive stopped working is rolled back my Windows Media Player from vers 11 to vers. 10 . I just could not get used to the look of 11.

Got my CDRW-DVD drive today .... still getting error message
When I installed the new IBM drive today, I still get the messages that Windows found new hardware, but then I get a last message saying that Windows encountered a problem installing the new hardware and it may not work properly. I uninstalled the optical driver in device manager and then rebooted the computer and tried installing the new drive, same message. Could anyone suggest what else might be wrong; My floppy drive for the ultrabay port works fine. I went to Lenovo to see about downloading a driver for this, but I can't find anything.
Thank you

How strange. Windows normally automatically detects optical drives of all capabilities upon booting - I upgraded my R40 from a DVD-ROM to a DVD-ROM/CDRW drive recently and it just worked without any hassle.
Could you supply more precise details of the error message?

Hi Geoff, it is strange. When I loaded in my IBM floppy drive the first time, it found it right away; that drive is working great as A drive in My Computer. I did notice that last week when I used my thumb drive for something, it was showing under my computer as drive D instead of drive E like is always has. I didn't think anything of it, until I tried my CD drive the next day and found it would not work. Now when I put a music CD in the drawer, it spins like it always does and then just stops and WMP does not open. The new IBM drive I got today (FRU 08K9820) does the same thing, it will spin when I put a CD in but then stop. I really do not think my old drive was bad. I am wondering if there is a conflict of the drive assignments on my computer, but I don't know how to look for them.
The exact error message I am getting when I look at the drive info for my CDRW/DVD drive is: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
Thank you so much for replying.

Once, when I did an optical drive firmware update on a desktop PC, my backup program refused to use the drive anymore. Oddly though, I could still read and write to the drive with EasyCD Creator. While troubleshooting this problem, I came across some information that mentioned that optical drive firmware updates create registry keys, and that sometimes the old keys will cause problems. If you are good with regedit, you may be able to find all of the keys and delete them, then reboot and let Windows reinstall the drive. Instead of spending time trying to fix it, your time may be better spent doing a fresh install of Windows. OTOH, perhaps someone else will post with better information than I have.
FTR, it wasn't until I reinstalled Windows a couple of months later that the optical drive and my backup program would again work together. In case you were wondering, I had already tried reinstalling the backup program, and I had tried downgrading the optical drive firmware to the previous version without success.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I best leave the registry alone, as I am not familiar with that work. I wanted to say that a month ago I upgraded my HDD to an 80GB and still have the old 20GB HDD in a HD enclosure case with a USB connector, it still has my old copy of Windows on the HD. Is it even feasable to find the Windows Drivers folder on that copy of Windows and copy it and replace the Drivers folder on my current HD?? Sorry if that is stupid, I just remembered I still have my former HD here.
Thank you
Thank you

I kind of doubt if that will help, but it couldn't hurt to try. You might try running System File Checker to check the integrity of the Windows System files. Go to Start > Run, and type SFC /scannow in the text box and click on OK. You could also try Windows Update to see if it finds anything, but I believe these are both longshots. My personal opinion is that the problem is most likely with the registry keys. It is possible I suppose that you could have a hardware problem with the IDE controller (or an optical drive hardware problem).

Thank you again. I really don't think it is a hardware problem, as I just got my new IBM CDRW/DVD drive today and it is giving the same message upon installing. I can't even re-install Windows since this CD drive is not operating. I think I am screwed.

Yes, I already tried this and there are no old drives shown. I did take a look at Driver Details and it showed 5 file locations for drivers; 4 of them were Microsoft files and had a green check mark on them. One was by Oak Technologies (C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\AFS2K.SYS) and it did not have a green check mark on it.think2much wrote:Allow Device Manager to show hidden devices and remove any instances of old optical drives. I don't know if this will help, but it only takes a couple of minutes.

I had a quick look on Google to see what it said about the error you mentioned, and this is one of the sites I found:

It describes a fix using the registry editor, unfortunately. The good news is that it is a fix described by Microsoft...

Geoff and GomJabbar - it worked!! Thank you so much guys, it was the registry thing like you both thought. I didn't have the heart to enter the registry myself, so I downloaded the sissybar program from the Microsoft website "The Guide Program". You download it, run it and in under 2 seconds the bothersome filters are removed from the registry. I then uninstalled my optical driver and rebooted, viola! my CDRW/DVD drive now shows on My Computer and I am happily playing a CD as I type. Anyone want to buy my old CD/DVD drive? I just tested it and it also still works.
