Adjusting RAM usage settings to reduce page file usage?
Adjusting RAM usage settings to reduce page file usage?
I've got a t23 with about 640mb ram, but when I go into the task manager, I've noticed that the peak commit charge rarely goes above 400mb.
I can see that my pagefile size is set to 256mb, however, win2k recommends about 956mb as a proper size. With 256, i've never had a problem
Is there any way to change the virtual memory or page file settings so that reads and writes to disk are at a minimum? If I have 640mb ram and the peak charge rarely goes above 400, then am I not utilizing the memory to it's full potential and creating unnecessary reads and writes to the slower hard drive?

I think your page file size is low enough especially with 640MB RAM. But here is a link to something you can do that pretty much keeps Windows using your RAM rather than going to the page file, which it can do even if you have sufficient RAM available:

I read this here on another thread but cannot find the thread. Here is another interesting link about page file efficiency:

In this thread, there is a link to instructions on how to edit the registry so Windows will use all the RAM first.

I'm giving the first hack from tweakXP a shot, though I don't see any difference yet.
As to the second hack on that site, it caused my computer to freeze once I logged in. I had done both at the same time, and changing the Cache value back to 0 alleviated the problem I created.

I didn't see it in the article, but does do these tweaks work for Win2k too?Purcy wrote:I think your page file size is low enough especially with 640MB RAM.
