battery vs. ac

#1 Post by jschunkew » Fri Sep 17, 2004 6:26 pm

Been running my new t42 DXU on the battery
since getting it two weeks ago. It really wasn't
very much faster than my PII desktop at web
browsing. Today decided to try AC. Holy smoke!
this thing is lightning fast now. My dial up
connection feels like it's high speed.

Were you expecting different? I am not in any way being sarcastic. Web browsing is a function of browser rendering as well as line speed. So speeding up your computer *will* make it seem faster.

FWIW, I get decent service out of my battery and I set the Laptop to Always ON. I know I burn up juice faster, but it is within workable parameters for me, and I like the higher speed.

The power management setting sound like they are on "battery life" and not "performance". This will cut your processor speed by about 66% You're effectively using a 600MHz processor on battery at these settings.

Thanks. How exactly do you change from "battery
life" to "performance"?

Just click on your power gauge on the taskbar. Lots of options there. Choose a one of the preset power schemes, view the scheme settings, or launch battery maximizer wizard and create your own (each scheme has separate settings for battery/plugged-in).

Also, there are lots of other tweaks and settings for your thinkpad. Most of which can be accessed from your Control Panel > Thinkpad Configuration utility. :)
