17 Inch Thinkpad In The Works??

#1 Post by realitycheck » Wed Feb 14, 2007 6:59 pm

Well I was rather surprised to see that the z60m has completely dissappeared from the Lenovo website.

A call to sales desk confirmed that the z60m is not currently available due to "supply problems", but may return later in the year. Right. Like TV shows that are on "hiatus". Read: cancelled.

Anyway what I am really looking for is 17 inch desktop replacement laptop. I am looking at the HP dv6000t, but would really prefer to stick with Thinkpads. Any one hear anything about a 17" Thinkpad? I don't care if it in the 3000 or Thinkpad lines.

Basically, its not out of the question that they might do something like this in the future, but there is no news or info that I know of surrounding 17" thinkpads.

I doubt it, people think of thinkpads mainly for business/professional use and there is already many strong players in that market, It would really take a very appealing design/package/price to compete with Dell and HP and dont think Lenovo wants to take that gamble right now.

A much lighter weight might do it, something as light as the 17" MacBook Pro.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)

As much as i'd like to see the Houdini prototype become the new A series with a 17-19" screen, dual optical and raid as a proper desktop replacement, there is certainly nothing planned at the moment which means even if they do decide to enter this market segment, it won't happen before the end of 2008

But that lighter weight will probably put the essential TP quality and tough exterior at risk. If they do make a 17/19in platform, my bet is it will be rediculous in appearance resembling the g series.

17"+ laptops are perversions, IMO.

Why not a docking station + LCD ?

Lots of my users at work use 12 or 14 inch notebooks as desktop replacements in this configuration. The seems to be a healthy compromise to avoid lugging a >7 lb computer around all of the time.

YMMV.

I have my 14.1" t60p and I have it pluged into a 24" monitor when I am at home, and when I am away I just use it that way.

17" laptops completely defeat the purpose of portability.

I actually have a dual monitor setup with my 24" being the main display with my t60 on the side, I get a sore neck from moving back and forth:)
