Several Z61p questions(vista and hardware related)

#1 Post by Müsli » Thu Feb 15, 2007 6:35 pm

1. Is it true that the v5200 is underclocked? 2. I installed Vista business x64(dont know if there´s a diffrence but it´s a msdnaa version) 3-4 weeks ago now there are several problems: Random Bluescreens with "driver irql not less or equal" and on the next startup windows says "Windows funktioniert nicht mehr einwandfrei" means Windows is no longer working properly(they´ll notice me if there´s a solution;) If a programm tries to open a link in IE i get an error message "The programm must close to allow a previous installation attempt to comlpete. Please restart." Sometimes the sceen just turns off. The led still indicates hdd usage but nothing happens. After waiting ca.20min I pressed and hold the power button to restart(everything else did not work). In the end after 3 weeks of Vista i got 170 problems send to microsoft and no solution. I now think about going to OS X, or is there someone who can help me with all these vista issues(Thinkvantage does not work properly too). Is there a better solution than OS X 3. I just noticed one pixel right in the middel of the lcd that turns green if it should turn black(all other colors work or i dont notice the diffrence) Shoult I rma it? How long does it take to get a new one(I had to wait about 2 month for this one) 4. With an external crt plugged in I get every 20 min for under a sec a fragmeted picture on lcd and crt. Has anyone experienced this before?

I don't mean to be rude but perhaps you should 'go back' to XP Pro and wait until all the bugs are fixed in Vista.

Seriously, why should we be beta testers for Microsoft?

Depends on what you mean by underclocked. The V5200 and the X1600 use the same graphic chip and are identical hardware wise. However, the V5200 uses a slower CAD professional driver. If you want, you can load the Omega 3rd party radeon drivers and your V5200 will work just like a x1600 (Same speed -- no CAD professional Drivers).

I don't know if Omega has Vista 64bit compatible drivers. Also, I would agree with the other reply and recommend not using Windows Vista just yet. If you really want Vista, I would also suggest you switch to the 32bit version as it will not have as many compatibility issues.

:banghead: thanks to windows Vista(and that all just to make ist safe  and stable now I understand y some people just switched when they played with their copy of vista) my post just got lost.
so im doing it short.
dont want to go back to xp(if I go back I would try windows 2003 someone said it would be the most stable os microsoft ever did)
will backup everything and install osx, then wait for my 32 bit vista(my lenovo upgrade version...I think it will never get to me)
the thing is i tryed omega in xp and there was no difrence between the benchmark results(did no CAD, thats coming in semester break) i just want to know ist there really a diffrence between the clocks in these cards.

Your problem is the driver for the graphics screen. The FireGL drivers for 64-bit Vista is probably not fully ready yet. You may want to see if ATI has a driver update for you...

From what I have read the V5200 has about 450/470 gpu/mem clock and the X1600 has about 470/470 gpu/mem clock. I haven't ever tried the omega drivers, but I will next time I boot in windows and post the results. Also you should be able to use ATITool to set the clock speed of your card manually.

I thought so too but with Vista x64 unsigned drivers are not allowed  Thats good to know next time I´m able to work with AtiTool I´ll try to oc and protocol temp during Gaming/Rendering.

Yeah, forgot about that. I really dislike the direction we are headed in computers, where are prevented from doing what we want with our own computers.

Ok so my "klausuren" are done and I tried around a bit with all kinds of OS´s. OSX is really simple to install but i think I will just go back to windows XP and wait untill Vista SP1 is ready. I just hope Steve jobs gets the idea that it would be cool to open his os to all pc´s and stop his crappy I´m a PC I´m a mac adds. One more thing how is vista working for all who purchased their thinkpad after launch with vista preinstalled?

I am using Vista Business 32bit and everything seems stable and fast.... so far. I think the 32 bit version is well built and more driver available to support it...
