need help reformating hard drive n install windows xp

i just bought a ibm thinkpad t60 off a guy on ebay n now i cant contact him.
its got his login but i dont noe the password (also has a fingerprint reader), i tried to boot the laptop with my (legit) windows xp cd to format n install a clean windows xp but when i press enter in the setup to reinstall windows it says "setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. setup cannot continue. to quit setup, press F3."
can someone help me please thank you

Go into the BIOS and set the SATA to "Compatibility mode"
