Which means they look very "cheap", huge and heavy ;-(. And I think they are going to be heavy since its nearly the same material and components.
It will also have the FAN problem (same BIOS and architecture) ;-(.
Bah IBM sucks now they resell their own old and bad stuff!

I got my hands on a pre-production model from IBM for a few hours on Monday. The T42/42p with 15" looks like the T41p. It uses the same material as the T41p, not all ABS plastic like the R50p. And you will definitely be surprised at how it feels weight-wise, compared to the R50p. Is it as light as the T41p, no. But it's not heavier by much. The only similarities I can find are the additional room for the palmrest and the area on each side of the keyboard, as it is slightly wider/deeper to accomodate the larger screen.
Many reviews have been using T41/R50 stock pictures in their reviews, btw.
Also, of note: The Dothan seems to run much cooler. Ran a couple hourse of video and CPU benchmarks, and palmrest and underneath system were significantly cooler than Banias, even with all power management turned off. We'll see if this bears out in retail/production versions as well.

Oops.. for some reason my edit didn't take... anyhow... I took a look at the pictures, and that is indeed the same as the T42p I saw (helps to notice the actual markings too!) lol...
Anyhow, to reiterate, the build quality was on par with the T Series we know and love, with magnesium case/cover, etc. Didn't feel cheap at all.
Take care.

The unit looks like a cross between the R5x and T4x cases. Note the metal hinges are higher on the T42p to accomodate the larger screen, and also note that the hinge on the right hand side is much wider than on the T40/41/p series.
Also note that the bottom of the machine seems to be smooth, in contrast to the ridged bottom of T40/41/p. We can tell that this base is wider because the 9-cell battery doesn't sit flush with right hand side of the machine.
The base is clearly different from the R5x though. Look at the left hand side - there are still 2x PC Card slots, whereas the R5x only has a 1x slot (looks like a 2x slot but only 1 ejection mechanism).

Interesting - I re-checked the IBM R50 photos on reviews.cnet.com and the IBM website 3D models of both the T4x and R50. In all the photos and models, the R50 has a single blue button for ejecting PC Cards, while the T4x clearly has two smaller buttons.
Can anyone clarify this?

yup, my R50p has two slots and two eject buttons as well.
after seeing the T42p pics, i can't wait for the T50p. my biggest gripe about the R50p is the abs plastic construction. for what used to be ibm's most expensive thinkpad 6 months ago, i can't believe that it arrived without a single bit of the traditional "thinkpad black" construction.

Thanks for the clarification
I didn't realize the R50p had the 2x slot with 2 ejection buttons.
