Help on new laptop....

#1 Post by rscosworth » Sat Feb 17, 2007 1:29 pm

Guys,

Have a problem.

I sold my T60 2637-AH3 for the same price i bought it for ($1200) i also bought two T42 2373-4WG for ($1200) and then sold them for ($1550).

I loved the T42's even though they didnt have the high res screen i would prefer, the T60 never ever felt fast even though it was a duo CPU with 1gb.

I have the oppurtunity of getting a brand new with full warranty T43p, 2.1ghz, 1gb (1 dimm), 128mb graphics, 14.1 SXGA, DVDRW, for $1445.

Whats your opinion on the T43p's? I plan on running vista in the future however i rarley keep my laptops for more than 6 months.

Please give me your advice.

Cheers

The T43p has a fairly high chance of having fan noise problems, i.e. the fan is loud, always on, or pulsating. Ask the seller whether this particular unit has such problems.

Otherwise, the T43 and T43p are very powerful machines. I owned a T43 (1.86GHz/2GB/5400rpm/64MB X300) for 5 months and it didn't feel any slower than my current T60. That particular T43 flexed a little more than the T60, but I believe that most T43's are more solid than the one I had.

I don't think $1445 would be considerd a great deal in the States though.

Then be prepared to be disappointed by the fan noise. Most T43p's don't have fan noise problems, but a significant percentage of them do.

Most likely you found the T60 slow because all the bloatware Lenovo puts on newer laptops, also because there's installed tons of Thinkvantage software. Did you installed Windows as a clean install?

Also, did you find to yourself other dissadvantages the T60 has over the T4x machines?

i never tried my own clean install, only the preload, ive never had problems before with the ibm preloads....

i also found the t60's fingerprint really bad compared with the z60m i owned before that, also found that quicker than the t60 and it was a 1.86 (old style cpu)

While this question wasn't addressed to me, it reminds me of one dissadvantage my current T60 has over my T43: the right palm rest generates a lot more heat.

I have never owned a T42p but due to the T43's fan noise problem and flex, and the T60's palm rest heat, I suspect that a top-of-the-line T42p (2.1GHz, 2GB RAM, 128MB video, 7200rpm HDD) might be the "most perfect" T-series Thinkpad ever made.

I don\'t feel heat from my T60 palm rest. :?

As for the T43p question, may i have the priviledge to invite moderator Christopher Wolf to answer this. He has good informations and he is a T43p owner himself. :-)

Christopher was lucky and got a T43p without fan noise issues. He wrote literally hundreds of posts arguing with other T43/p users whether this fan problem is unique to the T43 line. But eventually, even he admitted that the percentage of T43/p's affected by this problem seems higher than for other T-series Thinkpads.
