Problems with DVD
Problems with DVD
Hi guys,
I just got a T60. It was installed by the IT guy at work which did not manage to install anything really apart from XP (is was not installed with windows as we have volume licensing at work...). So I had to download all the drivers myself and used the software update utility for that. All is working fine now apart from the DVD which is not recognised. It used to work before I downloaded all the drivers but now it only works before windows starts up (if a bootable CD is inserted). I don't know after which point it developed the conflict.
When I check the device manager, I see the following fault:
Under - IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers
There is a problem with the following device:
Primary IDE Channel
This is a capture of the device manager screen: http://pic40.picturetrail.com/VOL352/81 ... 211744.jpg
Everytihng else works fine, HDD etc.
So what now? I tried to find a different driver but was unseccessful.
Does anyone have any idea?
Thanks

So far it seems a software problem related to out of date motherboard's chipset driver to me. Make sure your:
-Windows XP is upto date.
-Thinkpad is upto date with ThinkVantage.
-Windows XP is upto date.
-Thinkpad is upto date with ThinkVantage.

I've done both mate. All the possible updates. And then the problem started.ryengineer wrote:Make sure your:

So don't know what to do now? Go back to factory settings and start all over or find a solution if there is one?
Shall I maybe try to roll-back the chipset driver?

Can you post in detail which drivers you installed? I think the drivers provided by Windows XP and thinkvantage are overlapping.
Also are you using Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120% by chance?
Also make sure all other devices are working properly as primary IDE channel could also include another device.
Put going back to factory state as a last option on your list.

Well I just tried rolling back the driver of the faulty device and it immediately recognised the DVD which now seems to work fine.
I also think that as long as it used the XP driver it was working fine and then when I installed a newer driver with all the updates it stopped working.
So now it's using the XP driver again.
So I'm happy. I guess I had to look for all the difficult solutions to then try the easiest one
Thanks for your help rengineer!!

Why is MS posting HW updates?
As a non techie - I am really frustrated with all of the vendors getting into the mix.
The ideal value for me(thinkpad owner) would be one source for everything. All I have to do is let thinkpad manager download and install everything properly.
Now, you have to spend a day reviewing all the documentation on how to properly download and install each update and then read all the MB's to find out about any known gotchas.
It just seems people always have problems when they go to lenovo site and download all the most recent drivers.
Geez - this is just one machine. Multiple these issues with multiple machines and network protocols.
I worked at Network General early 90's - (sniffer). What a great tool - SW and Network troubleshooting for various networks and protocols(think 7 layer OSI model).
Why - does this tool exist?
Because vendors continue to point the finger at each other - Beyond the obvious issues like duplicate tcp/ip packets and congestion - many of the problems were at the software layer - incompatability issues drivers etc.
