T41 to T43P motherboard upgrade

#1 Post by dyoes » Sun Feb 18, 2007 12:41 pm

I have a T41 ATI 7500 32mb, 14.1 xga LCD and the mobo video is messed up and if you move the TP the video freezes up and the pc locks up. Bottom line is the mobo has some flex in it and is trash now.

I was about to sell the laptop and get a T43P or T60P so I wont have to worry about Vista(Aero) and could play BF2, then this happened.

So Ive ordered a T43P mobo, 533mhz ddr2 mem, 760 cpu, and T42P long HS fan. Anyone see any problem with this? Im failry certain the XGA will work with the Fire GL 128mb, but was wondering if I need the T43/T43P inververter?

btw, anyone need 2x512 pc2700, or 1.6 1mb cache 400mhz banias cpu w/short fan?

The inverter you have will work. However, you need a different PC Card / ExpressCard slot cage (FRU #91P8833); the one from the T41 is PC Card only and will not fit the connector on the T43 motherboard.

Think you might need a 533mhz cpu for the t43,t43p. There is a pin mod you can do to get the t41 400mhz cpu to work with the newer board but it overclocks it, so beware.

http://www.laptoplogic.com/resources/de ... =35&page=1

You need the t43 pc card/express as the t41 is different and wont be able to plug into a t43 board. I just got my t43 pc card and I can say the part that plugs into the mobo is different.

I think the upgrade is pretty straight forward, i'll be doing the mobo upgrade part tommorow so i'll let you know how it goes. The t42p long fan and 760cpu havent arrived just yet but when they do i'll post back that too. Hopefully I'll have some pics of the upgrade.

I have the same problem with my video card for the freezing, anyway!! it expensive just if you change for same motherboard, Its the best way to upgrade!

i buy the FRU #42T0073, you ?

Tanks for the links, i try to overclock my 400mhz, another time I changed for better!

do you know if i don't install the pc card/express and no connection with the mobo, if it work good ?and no prob for fit the casing?

I wait for your pictures

Not sure of the fru on the board I bought, but it is the T43P as it has the mobility Fire GL PCI Express on the video chip.

Upgrading to the T43p seemed like a no brainer for me, cost isnt that much for the upgrade when compared to buying a regular T41 board.

I would guess that it would work without connecting the pc card/ express.

On that pin mod im not sure if the banias cpu's will work for it. Its meant to work with the 400mhz donathan cpu. I guess it all depends on the cpu you have in your T4X, I happen to have the 1.6 banias cpu so I dont think i will risk it, and I have a 760 cpu on the way anyway...

The pinmod will also work with the banias, the 33% speed increase can also be achieved, but the cache will still be 1MB I am tempted of doing that mod on my Z60t.

( If i can find a cheap 1.6,1.7 or 1.8 400mhz dothan )

Well Ive just installed the T43P mobo in the T41 shell, cant test it yet because the 760 cpu I ordered hasnt arrived yet but so far it all fits EXCEPT that black plastic thing around the memory that runs the wires, Appartly the T43 has some chips were the T41 doesnt and the plastic is sitting over top so its sort of sticking up, so ive had to trim the bottom of that plastic so it doest stick up, would be better to buy the correct part but modding the T41 plastic bit seems to sort of work. Besides that it all fits perfect.

Just changed the label to T43P, ahhh cant wait for the CPU now so I can fire it up...

dyoes,

You can try with your old CPU... it will either work or just no boot.. but you will not break it. Banias and Dothans are pin compatible. If a dothan 400 works without pin mod, most likely a banias will also... and if it does not work, you can always try the pin-mod. It's quite easy!
760CD -> 770X -> 600E -> T23 -> T40 -> T42 -> T400 -> T430

LCD cable for the boards might be different.

I think that that 128mb is offered in SXGA+ or UGXA which are 4 wire while XGA is 3 wire.

Might not be an issue but it probably will be.

Well a T43P wont work with a banias 1.6, just turns on the fan and one light thats it.

WHOOOHOOOO! Installed the new 760 CPU into the T43P put the heat sink on, connected my stock T41 lcd cable, installed keyboard and fired it up. IT WORKS! Came right up. Now im gonna put it all together properly.

T43P works with T41 14.1 XGA LCD,T41 inverter, T41 Cable, just so everyone knows.

Wierd thing though is the bios say for display video AGP or PCI. I have a PCI Express, hmm maybe new bois with fix this. Anyone else with a T43P have this?

Question

#17 Post by slee9421 » Fri Jun 08, 2007 11:30 pm

I am having problems with my T40. I suspect the problem might come down to a bad MOB. Where did you guys get the replacement boards and how much did they cost? Thanks.

Could one of you techical whizzs indulge me. What is a long fan, and this is distinguishable from what, a short fan perhaps ?

It is a sincere question. I am a T43p user with a fan so noisy it could wake the dead. Not being that clued up, I have never felt brave enough to use the fan control programme mentioned by others, but wonder whether there are other alternatives to the noise issue. If it possible to change the fan type itself, what might I be advised to consider ?

Thanks.

This is a long fan -

The extra piece on the long fan is to cool the GPU (Graphics chip). Normally it is not needed to cool the GPU on a T41, but it is needed on a T41/P. Some folks also claim that a long fan is needed after certain CPU upgrades ...

Seriously... the program kicks [censored]... Just read the manual (it's like a whopping 2 pages!) and use it, it has worked like a charm for ages now.
