X31 Problem with Fn+F5 to stop wireless card

#1 Post by HAL9000 » Mon Feb 19, 2007 3:09 pm

I have just installed a WPC54GS PCMCIA card in my X31 (Windows XP). I have installed the latest drivers. When I press FN+F5 to switch the wireless on/off I get an error that the power state of the card cannot be controlled. Anyone got any idea of a solution?

I have the same problem with my T40 with the latest IBM/atheros 802.11a/b/g PCMCIA adapter II (FRU# 39T0355). I installed the latest BIOS, Driver, Power Management and Hotkey software but I get the same message you get. Not sure what the WPC54GS adapter is (?)

My R52 does not switch my external wireless OR my external Bluetooth off/on with Fn-F5 - only the built-in wireless WiFi. Is it to supposed to?

I was under the impression that Fn+F5 is supposed to switch the internal wireless adapters only.

With a bit of research I think you are right and it may only do the internal wireless. Bit of a shame. So in order to save battery what can we do? Do we have to unplug it? Can we modify the Fn+F5 to disable PCMCIA wireless?

Cheers,

Dave

P.S. For the record if you use a linksys WPC54GS PCMCIA card in an X31 dont install the driver and utility package that it comes with. Just use the standard windows XP driver or be prepared for a world of pain.

Fn+F5 works!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just did an IBM update and low and behold it works now. Fn+F5 switches the wireless on and off now. God bless you Lenovo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So in summary-

If you use a Linksys WPC54GS PCMCIA card in an X31 (Windows XP) then Fn+F5 works. Make sure you have performed the latest IBM update as I have a feeling having the card allowed the wireless update to be applied. It also installs some snazzy wireless tools. The wireless indicator doesnt work though but I am still delighted. Hopefully this may work for you guys as well.

P.S. Dont use the Linksys CD driver and utility. Install card and let XP find it for itself otherwise you get a whole world of pain.
