This guy modded the power jack of his thinkpad to be like the magnetic connector in the macbooks. Good read - maybe some with a thinkpad to spare can attempt :)

Looks scary! I'd never do that to my Thinkpads, even if it was an old 365X that's worth only $10!
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)

That modification is pretty useful. I have accidentally caught a cord one time but the laptop only spun around about 90 degrees and didn't fall off of the table. It also didn't disconnect from the jack either.

As long as the contact resistance between the pin in the AC adapter cable and the pin inside the DC jack is low enough, you wouldn't be causing the AC adapter to deliver more current than normal. If I were to do it, I'd use a "pogo" pin on the end of the cable. It's essentially the same thing "breath" used (aluminum rod and spring) but it's all in one piece. They are expensive and hard to find, but we use them at work :) .

WOW thats amazing. I would never do that to ANY laptop unless it was 100% dead and useless.

I think he sort of Borged it up. Not that the notion is not without merit, though.

I wonder how many cycles the ThinkPad port replicator is good for? Has anybody worn one out? How many years did it take?

I'm actually using mine at home and running without it at work. (But not as my primary PC there.)
