Might have solved heat problems
Hi,
In my attempt to try to solve the lid closing and blinking problem ( which i still haven't solved and would be really grateful if someone helped me solve it), i might have solved the heat problem. "MIGHT" being keyword here. I was installing some device drivers and after i installed the thinkpad power management driver (v 1.41) the heat of the right hand side has now not been a problem. I don't know why lenovo does not automatically download this in their updater but anyway it solved the problem. can anyone else verify this? I don't have any graphs or any definitive evidence, just that the right hand side ain't burning my right hand now and i have the x60s plugged in and on for 7 hrs now (with intel card not atheros).

ThinkPad Power Management driver for Windows Vista, XP, 2000, Me, 98SE - ThinkPad
I do not have an X60. I just post the above for anyone looking for the ThinkPad Power Management driver, version 1.41, release date 01/22/2007.

Power Manager is for controlling operation whether on battery or AC power. It is basically a replacement for Battery MaxiMiser. Windows Power Options provide some of the same features, but Power Manager offers more. You can set up power schemes that control LCD brightness, CPU speed, and CD drive speed. You can check battery status and recondition the battery. I am speaking in general terms here. I am not sure exactly if all of these features are supported in Vista.jck8r wrote:What exactly is the difference between this software and the "Power Manager for Windows Vista - ThinkPad " version 2.01 released the exact same day? Can anyone clarify?
OTOH, the Power Management driver is basically what controls the Suspend and Hibernate features of the ThinkPad (ACPI Power Management).

Hmm, something interesting happened to my Thinkvantage access connection. when i installed some of the drivers it wasn't able use the "find wireless network" button. In the alt menu it was blanked out as an option. I reinstalled thinkvantage access connections and now the heat is back. hmmmm interesting is the heat when the ac is on attributed to the access connection's power mode? I'll uninstall my thinkvantage access to see what happens
Hi,
I just bought a X60s (see my sig) and the palm rest is normal, not too hot and un-supportable. I used the WLAN all the day on with AC connected and I didn't found any hot on the right palm rest.
Maybe it's a new production from Lenovo and they have found a way to resolve that.
Regards

I think that I have found another solution. After installing Power Management driver 1.41 and nothing changes.
So, I try to lower the transmit power of intel WIFI card to the lowest and found that it helps a lot.
My APS temp before is around 54-55 C. Now it is around 47-48 C when AC power plugged in.

you sure 1.41 is working to reduce the power dissipation from WireLess card?
my version is 1.33. yet, my APS remained around ~44degC.
Transmission Power is 25.1mW.
maybe the culprit is that i left the Wifi connected without doing intensive downloading. Only email checking, normal web browsing and MSN stuffs.
should i give a try to 1.41???

Lenovo just released a new version of the palm rest plastic case piece. I got it on Friday (my old one cracked). The metal shielding underneath the palm area is a different material than my old version, and looks pretty beefed up. I haven't noticed a hot palm rest yet, but I have at least felt warmth from the area yet. It is too early to say that it solves the issue, but so far, not hot palm.

I might have to get a new one too. I removed the verizon card but the heat is still pretty bad.

Where did you buy it? $95 dollars here.jgsx wrote:39T7479 that's for the one with a finger print reader hold. I think it is like $41

Directly from IBM/Lenovo. ALL of those thinkpad repair places are scams. All that they do is order the same part directly from IBM and charge double or more of the retail price.berlin wrote:I might have to get a new one too. I removed the verizon card but the heat is still pretty bad.

I removed the Verizon card. I also bent the copper plate to touch the bottom of the keyboard to help dissipate heat and removed the LAN sticker. but it didn't do much. Poorly designed, I say, and cheap materials compared to the older Thinkpads. I guess I'll have to shell out dough for the new cover.

when using the Wifi, it really can't help to reduce the heat. unless, you use cable lan that would solve the heat at right palm rest.jgsx wrote:Ok, the palm rest still gets hot with this new version. It might not be as bad as the previous one, but it is still hot.

Another solution would be to remove the Wireless card and go pcmcia. I wonder if a short one is available so it doesn't stick out. I'll use the buil-in antenna instead.
This is pathetic. LOL Anyway, the heatsink helps but I just ordered coolermaster ramsinks from ebay:
