Get software installer to download xp software in VISTA??

After I installed VISTA on my T-40 there is almost no software downloaded when I use system update to update . I also tried Software updater and it doesn't show any downloads! So far manualy installing the xp software and drivers has worked so it seems that they are compatible with VISTA so how do I get software installer or system updater to download xp software in VISTA??
