Linux-ready T60p - rescue and recovery?

#1 Post by eliu01 » Tue Feb 20, 2007 8:16 pm

T60p model 2623-8YU is one of the "linux-ready" configurations that are sold without Windows preinstalled. In the tabook, it says "There is no preloaded software on this Linux-ready system." However, on Lenovo's website, the description for the 2623-8YU lists a number of included software, including Symantec Client Security 3.0, ThinkPad Configuration Utility, and ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery.

Do they provide these programs on CD or preinstalled on the hard drive? I already know that they are Windows apps, but am wondering if they would put them on the drive without a Windows install. If they do that, the natural question to ask is, why bother?

Thanks in advance!

You can download the ThinkVantage software (but not Symantec Client Security 3.0, WinDVD, and other commercial software), but as you point out, they are Windows apps. Without any firsthand information on the Linux-ready boxes, I suspect this information has been posted in error by someone that didn't know any better. Errors have been posted on Lenovo's site in the past. For instance IIRC, the T60's were posted as having S-Video in some sales brochure download, when in fact they never did. The tabook was accurate, but the other information was not.

Funny, I actually just got a 2623-8YU last night. The hard drive was blank and there was a sheet of paper in the box giving me a license to use PC-DOS and offering to sell me PC-DOS installation media for $20 if I needed it. So, I installed Vista myself and ran the Lenovo system update and it automatically installed (among a lot of other things) Thinkpad Configuration Utility, Rescure and Recovery 4.0, and Lenovo Client Securty (not sure if this is the same as Symantec Client Security). It didn't install WinDVD though.
