X40 USB controller fried?

#1 Post by tsubasa2oo2 » Wed Feb 21, 2007 2:14 pm

My usb is not recognizing any devices. There are some weird problem. The problem starts when I try to use my newly bought usb external HD. I had a wireless usb mouse plugged in before inserting the usb external drive. Then when I plugged in the HD, my computer suddenly shut down and restarted. It was restarting extremely slow, seems like totally stopped. So I have to force it to shut down (holding the power button for few secs). Then unplug every cable except power. After I restarted the computer, none of my usb drives work. The weird thing is, the one I used for wireless mouse doesn't recognize at all, meaning not even detected. But when I insert the wireless mouse cable to the port where I plugged in the external HD, it detected as "Unknown Device". Same thing happens to my external HD, the port I had the HD plugged in doesn't even detect the drive, but when I plugged into the port where I used for mouse, it detected as "Unknown Device". Now I tried to use a USB Thumb Drive, and still one port recognized as Unknown Device or even said "Have problem installing" where the other port not detecting it at all.

I've tried the following already and hope someone can give me some help please:
1) Uninstall all USB controllers and Root Hubs and restarted computer.
2) Flashed BIOS
3) Updated drivers to other available ones for me to select in the Device Manager
4) Tried disable one usb controller at a time to see which one is still working.

Do you have win XP SP2 installed? If so it comes with the drives, maybe unistall the usb's from devcie manager and let XP install it again, if that doesn't work you will need a new motherboard because it's usb controler is fried. :(

Good luck.

the drivers I believe is in lenovo website, in software driver section. You gotta download the intel chipset, that is the part of the usb drivers. But I doubt that would help you much with the usb problem.

Hi! For what its worth, I had the exact same problem no more then two weeks ago. It was a hardware failure that required a board replacement from the depot. Warranty service was great. From my initial phone contact to having my machine back in my hands was only 4 days. If your unit is still under warranty, you should call and ship it in.
