Sudden battery drop

#1 Post by dclee012 » Thu Feb 22, 2007 3:10 pm

Hi

I have a T23. While using battery, the gauge (maximiser utility) will suddenly drop from 95% to 3% and then die shortly after.

It seems like the battery is just old, however, it would be nice to observe the power drop in gradual increments. I know in the more recent "Power Manager" on T4x+ series, there is a gauge reset option, under battery maintenance. Does something like this exist for the T23? Or is there a more accurate way to monitor the battery?

Thanks
-D

It sounds like you might need to recondition the battery.

If you are running Battery Maximizer, simply left click on the Green Battery icon and choose "Battery Information"....then click on "Battery Health". From there, click on "Battery Tips". This will explain the process to you. It will also let you know that you should do this about 3 times, in order for it to properly work.

I have the same problem with my T23. If you find a way to recondition it, please let me know!

Of course I did, but my system has a problem with waking from standby (since I've done a sxga+ conversion - dunno why) - it does not wake at all. So it would be bad if i just keep on turning it off with a power button when it wakes from standby...
My battery was first used on 3-2003, and the battery health indicator is yellow.

My Old T21 Main Battery is like that. It dropped from the 40's to 2%. Then It would die out. I tried reconditioning it, but I guess it was just too old. I could only get like 10 minutes tops out of it.

If you need a replacement buy a T30 battery from xreplay on eBay. I just got mine today and it only has 30 cycles on it.

It easy for you guys to buy used batteries on eBay :)
For me, the only way is buying a new battery for 100EUR approx (around 140$). The [censored] thing is not even an original IBM... :(

Oh. Didn't notice that. That stinks!
Reconditioning didn't work for me, so I don't know...

Those of you with sudden battery drop problems: are you, by chance, using a PCMCIA wireless card?

Not me... I'm still using the ol' wire :) Just kidding, I'm not using anything in PCMCIA slot, except for USB 2.0 sometimes (not even often).

Do you think there is a relation between the two? I have a T23 with odd battery behaviour and a PCMCIA wireless.

Although I haven't exactly done scientific testing on one of the T20's I have with an older battery it works fine (90 minutes) without the wireless card. When the card is installed battery life can go from 80-90% to 5% in the blink of an eye. Using a new battery in the same unit results in much more predictable behaviour.

It does sound like the batteries are getting old, i dont know too much about the battery life line, I do however know that when I use my USB 2.0 with a USB wireless adapter plugged into it, it uses more battery power, however, this is a gradual thing in the decline of my battery status.

What ever you plug into your laptop will use battery power, even an external optical mouse and I beleive running the speakers.
