X31 7200 RPM Hard Drives?

#1 Post by shalliday » Fri Feb 23, 2007 11:27 am

I am looking to upgrade my X31 40gig 4400 RPM hard drive with a faster 7200 RPM unit. Thinking maybe a 100gig unit would be a good choice.

Having read numerous posts on this forum, I am now more confused then ever as to what models are compatable with my X31 and what model(s) would be tgood choice(s) to go with.

Would like to do this right the first time and not waste time and money on buying the wrong one. Would very much appreciate any and all feedback and opinions.

Thanks

the hitachi travel star 7k100 will sure work well.

I'm currently using Fujitsu MHV2100AH, 100gb but 5400 rpm, runs well
too

At this point in time, the Hitachi 7K100 is the fastest drive available. It's quiet (as long as you don't get an E7K100!), has low power consumption and works beautifully in an X31.

Highly recommended!

I have a 7K100 in my X31, super, super fast drive. It really does make a huge difference. I recommend the 7K100.

ditto. I swapped in a 7K60 (earlier version of Hitachi 7200rpm drive) into my X32 a long time ago, and actually had it for a brief while in an X31 as well. Subsequently have replaced the 7k60 with a 7k100; it works just fine also.

Stupid question, I have never squitched drives with only one drive...so how do you go about doing it?

Assuming you want to keep your data and your Windows install, the easy way is to (ask your friend to) clone the drive, with Ghost or Acronis TrueImage (which has free evals available). Boot with a floppy or CD, run Ghost/TrueImage and clone the drive -- the software will automatically extend your partitions to fill the new, larger disk.

Checked with my office and the can Ghost the 40 gig drive over to the 100 gig drive form me. All I have left to do is buy one which leads me to my next question.

As I was checking prices for the Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 100GB Hard Drive I kept getting 2 different part numbers:

Hitachi - 0A25016: Serial ATA-150, 7,200 RPM, 8MB
Hitachi - 0A25015: PATA, 7,200 RPM, 8MB

Could someone please tell what the difference is and which of these is the correct one to buy, or is there another part number I should be looking for?

Thanks again for all the help and assistance.

You need the PATA drive for the X31. Only very new laptops can take the SATA drive, the X31 is not one of them.

You will not regret your decision to upgrade the hard drive, will make a big difference. Good luck!

Does a 7200 rpm drive really make a huge difference over a 5400 rpm? I am looking at upgrading the HD in my X31, mainly to get some more storage capacity, but also to improve performance. Obviously, the 7200 is faster, but how big is the difference over a 5400 drive?

Indeed, the 7k100 is fast. For example, a 425MB file transfer from one partition to another, 7k100 takes about 30sec, and the western digital scorpio WD600VE @ 5400rpm about 1min30sec. windows boots faster, etc. BUT, this drive is like a supercar. You have huge performance but with the cost of noise, not so much of a comfort, vibrations, a litle more heat. i have one, and I can tell you from an objective point of view. If U really want performance, 7k100 is the way. But if U are in for peace and tranquilitty, buy somthing else. In my opinion scorpio is a wisper, so I've heard about samsung. IMO, if U have a descktop replacement, 7k100 will be great. but for x31 (with NHC running), is a pitty to ruind the silence with such a HDD.
PS: I reached 46 degreas C with the 7k100, but my X31 was on the bed, so you can imagine. normally, i get 38. You'll get used to it eventually, as I will :)) (HDD instaled yesterday)

Hmmm, I had some vibrations with a 7K60, and some other people have complained about the E7K100, but the standard 7K100 is pretty quiet (if not quite silent) and mine definitely does not have a noticeable vibration.

Since the X31 is my only system, I guess it is a desktop replacement in a way ... :)

I dont see any vibrations with the 7k60, but it does run a bit hotter than a 5400 rom drive. The difference is noticeable if you have sweaty hands (like me) but the speed gains compensate for everything else. 7k100 is supposed to use fluid bearings and runs cooler than a 7k60, so there should be no issues. I don't sweat at all when I use my T60 - I cant feel any heat on the palmrest :)

Thank you very much for the heads up. I ordered the following one from ComputerGiants.com for a total cost of $117 (no tax, free shipping charges).
This is the PATA drive for the X31, right?

Again, thank you all for your help and advise.

Now all I need to do is figure out how to install it and get everything transferred from the existing 40 gig drive. :)

This website (computergiants.com) which has perhaps the worst indexing and search facility I have encountered, wants to charge about $8 for shipping, at least when I made a mock order. The free shipping is on $500 orders and above. This makes their charge $125 or so, not much less than Newegg, and I'd much rather pay Newegg $6 more with a year's worth of exchanges if the drive dies, than for the 30 days this site offers.

There is lots of information on this website about how to clone your 40gb drive over to the 7k100. You should be able to do this easily and successfully.
