HDD Clone Instructions T42

#1 Post by jsmit86 » Tue Feb 27, 2007 5:41 pm

I am about to install a Seagate 100GB HDD in my T42. It is a ST9100823A-RK.

I downloaded Acronis 10.0 trial, and I have printed the Cloning instructions in the FAQ.

I seem to remember more detailed instructions, but despite several searches, I cannot locate them. Does anyone have a link for something with more detail?

If not, I am hoping that just following the FAQ instructions and the prompting from Acronis will help.

Thanks!

The FAQ and links provided are good enough. Pay attention to "how to screw up."

With Acronis 10.x, you don't have to even format the new HDD. Just plug and pray, sorry, ehh play. I found option "auto" is pretty easy.

.. eeeh, I think that the obvious logical would be to download and read the associated manual for Acronis True Image Home ver. 10 from http://us1.download.acronis.com/pdf/Tru ... _ug.en.pdf !

Chapter 13 deal with how to clone.

NB: I suggest that you use "Manual mode" for the cloning ("Manual mode – you will specify the new size and other parameters yourself"); that will enable you to size the hidden IBM service partition (= the HPA) on the new disk to be of the same size, or just slightly larger, compared to what it is in your source disk.

Good luck!

Best regards,

Johan

Thanks for the reply. I just started the process, and I used auto. I can see that I probably reserved too much for the hidden partition on the process. Oh well!

Can that be adjusted later?

Acronis is very easy to use even without following the FAQ's. The software comes with a pretty user friendly interface.

Acronis Cloning

#8 Post by ArtShapiro » Tue Mar 06, 2007 10:40 pm

I found that the free / trial version did not permit cloning.

A pure disk restore to a brand new larger disk worked, but kept the partition the old size, losing the remainder.

Subsequently, formatting the disk as one partition (I used the XP disk to do that) and then doing the disk restore worked - it copied everything and retained the full partition size.

The 10.0 trial version does support cloning. My only small problem is that it kept the percentage of the partitions the same, so my protected partition is too large. No big deal, but I gave up some space.

If there is an easy way to re-size the protected partition without screwing up the rest of the drive, please post.

I have been using Acronis 8 for quite a long time on my desktop computer, but in the case of my T43p, it just won't finish the work correctly.

All the partitions from the main HDD are cloned correctly onto a USB drive, resized proportinally, etc..., but when the newly cloned disk in inserted in the place of the original one, apparently the MBR doesn't contain any info about the installed OS.

I booted from a winXP CD, started the repair console to try and repair the MBR, but it says no windows installations could be found, although the cloned drive contains everything.

I still have to try some other solution, Ghost maybe ?

I am speechless. It's fantastic that someone found a solution to that, and less fantastic that no program seems to handle this IMO very usual configuration without having to physically swap drives.

Thanks for pointing me to that thread, great support as always in this forum
