how to disable ATI shared memory

#1 Post by chaukap » Wed Feb 28, 2007 11:34 am

Hi all,

I have a Z61p-9452JRU, which has 256MB of DDR3 VRAM (ATI mobility FireGL V5200).
However, ATI uses hypermemory which takes up another 256MB from my RAM for graphics, something I learned about on this forum.

My question is how do I disable the shared memory so that I have more available physical memory. I have already tried three things,
1. Check all the settings in the BIOS and could not find a option to change that.
2. Checked all the settings on ATI's Catalyst Control Center but no luck.
3. Installed a program "ATI tray tools", which configures the graphics performance. There is a setting to uncheck "Enable Shared Memory", which I did but nothing changed. My system still shows 512MB for graphics. I tried to do it again after a reboot, but it just crashed my system.

I typically use my laptop for mathematical comptations and never for gaming or CAD, so will like more RAM instead of going to pagefile.
Can anyone please help me in with this ? Also if anyone can post a link to a good article about optimizing RAM or memory management that would be great.

Thanks,
- Kaps

The fact that the graphics system shows 512MB for graphics, doesn't mean that it actually reserves it and thus eats your system RAM. All your physical memory is available to you (check in the System Properties).
