WTB: 256M memory for T22 (or possibly move to a T23...)

Hi,

I have a T22 with 256M that could use more memory (2 x 256M for 512M) -- I understand it needs some low density memory SODIMMs. If the memory is really expensive, I would consider just moving to a T23 or T30, especially considering that I'd also like a bigger hard drive and a CDRW module.

Any thoughts, advice, or offers are appreciated.

The T22 uses "low-density" PC100 SDR (Synchronous Dynamic RAM) memory while the T23 requires PC133 SDR. It may be possible that the memory inside your T22 is actually PC133 and could be transferred to the T23. The T30 requires a totally different type of memory (DDR; Double-Data Rate synchronous dynamic RAM) and is not compatible with either speeds of SDR memory. Also, the T23 can have a maximum of 1GB but needs two "high-density" 512MB modules to get there. The T22 maxs out at 512MB. This is if you are thinking about using any of your existing memory in a newer machine.

Generally, DDR memory is cheaper than SDR, given the same memory capacity of the module. The need/want/desire of a bigger hard drive and/or a CDRW drive is not totally dependent upon having a "newer" system than a T22. I have several 500Mhz 600X systems with a full load of memory (576MB), 60GB hard drives and CDRW/DVD drives. Yes, you will get better overall performance from a faster system, so depending upon the type (and number) of programs you run at the same time, an older (cheaper, but using more expensive memory) and slower system may still suit you fine over a newer (costlier, but using cheaper memory) system.

I may not have phrased my request very well.

I'm a Mac and Windows user finding myself in a position where it is useful to leave the iBook at home and carry a Windows laptop. To do this, I bought a T22, which has been very satisfactory. More so than I originally thought, but I'm wishing it had a little more memory and drive capacity, and then I'd be done with the iBook entirely.

So, I can buy more stuff for the T22 -- drives, memory, etc. and if I can get this reasonably, that's great, and I'd be interested. At some point, however, it might just be easier to buy a T23 or T30 that has those features.

So, I'd be interested in either option, at a reasonable price.

Well, to give you an idea of prices I've paid for memory from eBay over the last several months:

1 Micron 256MB PC133 (T22) - $24.36
3 Micron 256MB PC133 (T22) - $62.05
5 Samsung 512MB PC133 (T23) - $197.35

I don't have the exact prices for the DVD burners I've been buying but they are around $35-$45 for UJ-820 or UJ-840 drives. I adapt the front bezel and transfer the drive rails to fit inside the Ultrabay 2000. I have been buying brand new hard drives from newegg.com as used ones can have many problems. $55-$75 is about what you'd spend for a good 60GB drive.

eBay deals can be found if you are patient enough.

What is the type number of your T22? Check the bottom label for 2647-xxx or 2648-xxx. That can tell you the configuration as shipped from the factory if you enter that information into the Product Number field here at this site:
