X31 processor swappable?

#1 Post by sktn77a » Tue Sep 21, 2004 8:35 am

Anybody know if the X31 processor (P M Banias) is swappable with faster Banias or Dothan processors like the T40/T41 is? I'm considering getting a used 1.3GHz X31 that I could upgrade to 2.0 or faster down the road.

Nope. Why? Because on the X31 (and all its predecessors: X30, X2*, 570*/240* etc.) the CPU is directly soldered onto the mainboard.

Just out of curiosity... in the hardware manual of the X40... the CPU and on board RAM seem to be both combined into one little unit. And the manual makes it look like a separate unit. Anyone would like to confirm this?

No, definitely not, both are soldered onto the mainboard (in different places... the CPU and part of the memory are on the bottom side of the mainboard, for instance).

Btw, I like these Asians... taking everything apart they get hold of, almost right down to the tiniest bolt... ;)

The whole article contains lots of nice photos from the internals of the X40, also some comparisons with the X20 and X30, some views with the ultrabases attached etc. Worth a look!
