That doen't look like any I have seen till date - looks like it has a numpad

Is this a 17" mini-widescreen?

doesn't have numpad, just illusion, but screen seems wide.

Taken on a space station I guess

According to Wikipedia [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ThinkPad] there are several A31p (among other models) on the ISS. This could be one of them with some extra casing for the LCD. Just a guess...

should be a custom thinkpad - it is definitely not a regular model. Someone here might know better.

I recall a picture I had from a A30 which in the Ultrabay there was a Numpad, weird pic because of the screen though

It's not a numeric keypad -- if it were, you would be able to see the Enter key next to the guy's hand.

The A31p keyboard layout matches exactly:

A31. There are several on the ISS.

Right foreground - A31.

Middle ground/center - A31.

Background - L to R 760XD, A31, 760XD.

On shelf right background - 760XD.

The illusion is a result of optical distortion from a wide-angle lens... considering the amount of Nikon gear floating about, I'd guess a 20mm or perhaps the 12-24mm DX zoom.

Real men don't need telephoto lenses.

Well, if you consider that sooner or later, the ISS will probably suffer the same fate as Mir. I've seen a life expectancy estimate of the ISS put at 30 years.

The "yard sale" may take place over several thousand square miles, depending upon how well the spaceflight controllers can put it down somewhere in Oceania.

And it's quite likely that at least one of those A31p's will still be in use when the ISS is 30 years old!

Both are A31p, exactly like one typing on it. Wide screen illusion of A31p in the front comes from extremely wide angle lens used to make photo in rather narrow interior.

A31p is mobile workstation, means it's suitable for 24/7 operations. Other goodies beside workstation class certificate are; expandability (three spindle design), high end CPU and GFX (for it's time), 15" UXGA IPS display with UltraPort, built in firewire and S-video IN and OUT (S-video IN has Philips hardware MPEG encoder). Think that these (non)standard video features are useful in ISS and shuttle missions. Downside is weight but that matters mobilitywise on earth, not an issue in orbit.
A31p is discontinued, however there may chance to get refurbished one from Lenovo. A6xp with updated Core Duo CPU, GFX, USB2 etc in addition to standard A31p features would be great.

Yah the video ports are useful. I'm not sure whether it's here on this forum, but I read that they used the svideo port on their thinkpad to do russian -> american video codec conversions when they wanted to translate the soyuz / mir type video cameras to american style video signals to beam down to mission control during dockings.

Whenever you see on CNN those "first-person wrt to spacecraft" videos of the soyuz docking with the ISS, that's the thinkpad at work.

If you're talking about the TP with the screen attached to the wall in from of the astronaut; it can't be an A31. The scroll button is below lt/rt instead of in between and there are speakers above the KB. That would make it an A2x of some kind.

it has the row of programmable buttons down the left side..
its got to be either an A20 or A30 series..

so my vote is for an A30 series..

The A30 doesn't have speakers above the keyboard. It also has the indicator lights next to the power button (the one in the picture has them under the right speaker) and the model name badge on the A3x is located on the screen panel whereas the laptop in the photo has it above the keyboard; just like the A2x. Thus, I conclude the laptop photoed is really an A2x series machine; not an A31.

Nikon has had a longtime history with NASA, along with Hasselblad, going back to the Apollo days.

From the Hasselblad site, something most people don't realize: "The 12 HEDC cameras used on the surface of the moon were left there. Only the film magazines were brought back".

I simply must stop by and pick those up one of these days......
