CPU not maxing out...

Hey guys,

I only have one concern with my new t42. Even when I have power management set to high performance, I go into the system control panel and it shows the CPU running at 598 mhz... when plugged in and on max performance isn't the cpu supposed to run at full speed? (1.5 mghz for me)

Am I just not looking in the right place? Please let me know.

The Pentium M is designed to operate a low frequency when demand on the CPU is low. When demand for computing power increases, so does the frequency.

Check the clockspeed while running and MP3 encoder or running Prime95 - the processor should scale to its full speed (for example, my ThinkPad runs at 600 MHz idle, but 1.30 GHz if I do something computationally intense like compiling).

K. Eng, on my T42P, the frequency reported is 2.0 (1.99 to be exact) ghz when set to high performance, and 600 mhz when set to adaptive/custom settings.

However, Windows is known to be notoriously inaccurate for frequency measurement. Try using mobilemeter or the Intel frequency identifier tool.

Well it shows 1.5 now. I just went into BIOS and toggled the "On AC Run at Max" setting off then on and restarted. I don't know why I needed to do that before it would work ok though since it was already at the right setting to begin with.
