New T60, flex on left side

#1 Post by SpaRood » Fri Mar 02, 2007 6:50 pm

I have a brand new Thinkpad T60. However, I have heard the build quality is superior. That doesn't seem to be the case with me. When I press on the left side of my keyboard, I hear the laptop cracking. There is some flex. Is this normal?

Make sure the screws are tigtened.
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.

SpaRood, I can't get my T60 to squeak no matter how hard I press the left side of the keyboard, or any other parts of the keyboard for that matter. However, the left side of the palmrest above the PCMCIA slot does squeak easily. It doesn't bother me though.

When my T60 came in new, the palmrest was squeaking like crazy. I asked for a replacement (which got rid of the stickers :D) and put the new one on and the squeaking went away. On a whim, when I tried the old palmrest again, there was no squeaking. Lesson learnt: reseat the palmrest if it squeaks a bit before you ask for a replacement!

where are you pressing to get the cracking sound?
I had a compaq presario with a heatsink mount problem

the cpu heatsink/fan assembly which was right under the "qwe" keys was faulty, the mount(it's 4 nuts soldered to the MB) came loose, this made the cpu overheat and caused irradic restarts and freezes.

this was caused by faulty design, (the aluminum solders were very weak. 3 of mine came off and eventually had to drill holes and fit custom nuts/bolts the machine works fine now)

i don't think that your problem is a design problem but it might be a faulty assembly problem.

you should try disassemble / reassembling your keyboard.

Hi, it is just above LAN/modem port. Could you explain me how to fix it? I don't see any screws or way to open it. It is a my first Thinkpad.

i think you should ask somebody else for this. this is also my first thinkpad. (z61m with wide screen and speakers on the side of keyboard) so i don't know what you're machine would be like...

but in anycase, if the sound is coming from your lan/modem ports, it seems unlikely it would be a cpu mount prob as the cpu is mounted higher than that.

i would ask help from somebody that has experience with your machine or, take a look at your maintenance manual and try it yourself. (might void warranty)

best / safest way is to get warranty work on it.

good luck!

hi, sorry, I am a bit vague, but is on the left side of the tab. They keyboard is fine! :)

Only when I press on the chassis left side of the tab, I hear a 'clicking' sound. Probably I am not the first to encounter this. I have searched on the forum, but I couldn't find it. Does someone know how you can fix it?

Go to the directions for swapping a keyboard. This will guide you through reseating your keyboard.

No I have a 14inch T60. I have opened it, and tried to make it more fix, but it doesn't work. It seems the plastic doesn't fit tightly... :(

By the way, I only hear an annoying 'clicking' sound when I press on it. Is this normal? If not, I have to call Lenovo customer support and beg them to repair/replace the parts.

No it's not normal, but it doesn't seem to be a huge problem either. Calling Lenovo, shipping the laptop and waiting for the laptop wastes a lot of time and IMO it's not a big enough problem to justify going through the trouble.

It disturbs me...I am thinking of buying onsite warranty though...why do I have bad luck? :(
