IE7 Problem

#1 Post by rscosworth » Sun Mar 04, 2007 11:30 am

Guys,

If im browsing the net, say these forums.

Im half way down the page, i click on a link, i view the link and then i click the back button, i would like it to take me half way down the page where i was before, but it takes me right to the top of the page.

Anyone got any ideas, currently using Vista Home Premium.

Cheers

I've been playing with IE7 for a while now and think I found it.

Go to Tools (upper right)/internet options/tabbed settings.

Select "open links in a new tab" or however it was worded.

Links will open in a new tab leaving the original tab alone.
Common sense to some of us is unfortunately the higher education others strive to attain.

That works. I have been using that setting for a while. However, in this forum, and others I think, if you close the Tab you just opened, it affects the settings of the window where you opened the tab. That window can set all posts as "read" when the new tab is closed. I leave tabs open until I am finished reviewing new posts. That seems to help. .... JD Hurst

That's not really the OP's problem. When you hit the "back" button (whether on the keyboard or the toolbar), the previous page should be in the same position (scrollbar-wise) as when you clicked the link.

IE7 behaves that way on my XP system, as does Firefox. I don't know whether this is a Vista-specific IE7 issue, though.

Not Opera. Opera is so much faster when navigating these forums that IE7. With Opera, you can post a reply, then navigate backwards to before you even posted, then navigate forwards again to your posted reply. Try that in IE7!

I haven't used Firefox since v 1.5, so I will withhold my comments on it.

But isn't that a function of the setting for using cached pages in the browser? For example, on IE7, go to Tools > Internet Options > General > Browsing history settings and change the settting "Check for newer versions of stored pages".

I prefer setting this on "Every time I visit the webpage". This is one area that Firefox does not get right; it usually just serves up the stored version of the page from the local cache. That sounds like what Opera is doing for you, GomJabbar.

That can be a problem if you are maintaining a web site and you upload a new page. When you go to view the page, IE7 will always show you the newly-changed page and Firefox will usually show you the previous version, which can make you think that your change wasn't uploaded, when it was. With FF, you have to first clear the cache and then check your change. Irritating...

Well, I am giving it a test in IE7. Now I will add some more text.

OK, I have to eat my words. IE7 does function similarly to Opera if I change history settings.
Crunch, crunch ... hey, someone pass some ketchup please.

 Good comeback!

To answer the OP, I just tried this on IE7 on Vista. If I go to a long web page and scroll to the bottom, then click on a link, and then go back to the previous page, I find that IE7 returns to the exact same position in the previous page as where I left it.

This worked with the "Previous" button and with ALT+(left arrow). Sorry, no ThinkPad running Vista to test the ThinkPad web navigation key; but I do see the exact same behavior on XP on my ThinkPad.

The problem is not IE7! The problem is the ThinkPad navigation key. If you use the browser back button or the ALT+Left Arrow keys, then IE7 will take you back to the exact location on the page you came from, even if that happens to be half the way down the page...

Using the ThinkPad web navigation buttons take you back to the top of the previous page...

Is the web navigation key behavior only exhibited on IE7 on Vista?

The web navigation keys work correctly on IE7 on XP for me.

I agree that the ThinkPad "back" key on my T40 running XP-Pro SP2 returns me to the top of the previous page whereas the "back" button in the toolbar returns me to the exact spot on the previous page.

This behavior did not start until I finally upgraded to IE7 a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, I also did Software Installer updates and System Update-3 updates the same day.

If we assume that a new ThinkPad driver effecting the web navigation keys is the cause, then maybe it will someday be fixed .... though I am surprised that more folks aren't complaining about this.

I have almost stopped using the "back" key because of this and now try to always use the "back" button on the toolbar since it works correctly.

This is a real nuisance since I have always loved the "back" key and using a laptop without it is always a pain.
