TP600/600E: 2645-45U & 2645-51U

Hi all - new here. I seem to be a magnet to TPs landing in my lap (either as a form of payment or the give-to-person when one breaks down) I have zero experience with laptops but am now suddenly in possession of 3 TPs and a Dell. I've gotten them all fixed/working condition except the 600 model 2645-45U. The orig owner dropped it and basically was throwing it out. It has a cracked (unusable) LCD which of course was bypassed using a crt monitor, but I'm getting the 192 error. I feel the fan blowing so I'm either thinking it was dislodged or bent (haven't opened up the case yet), or the mobo is dmged as evidenced by the selftest, and/or the CMOS batt needs to be replaced. Just for the heck of it, I bought the batt off eBay for $3 (should be here in a few days), and what I thought was a bottom part (the entire bottom section intact) for it, ended up being the 2645-51U instead. I believe I'm stuck with it, but was just wondering if anyone knew outright - was hoping maybe I could talk to the seller.

So, is the bottom part of the 2645-51U (600E) compatible/interchangeable with the 600 2645-45U?

Yes, the bottoms are interchangeable, infact, if the base reads 51U, it is most likely a 51U, and someone probably swapped out bases after the systemboard died. By the way, if I am not mistaken, both the 51U and the 45U are both 600's, not 600E's.

As for the error, until recently, i would have said replace the fan, but there is a thread here, where someone had a 192 error, and it turned out to be the CMOS battery, and not the fan....odd.

EDIT: Just checked, both are 600s.

Hi,

I had a 192 error on my TP 600. I thought it was the fan too. I checked my CMOS battery and it was about 2.7 volts, or there abouts. I bought a cheap fan thinking it was the problem, but after changing the fan, the error still occured. I changed the CMOS battery and it has worked flawlessly ever since. For $3, it can't hurt to try. If it doesn't work, fans are really cheap on E-bay. FRU number is 05K4830 if you want to search for one on E-bay.

TFF, the 51U was listed as a 600E on the eBay listing, so thank you for looking it up for me and letting me know. That helps alot. I'm very new to the TPs so I guess I got lucky on buying the base after all (cost me $40 including s&h) since I've only opened up 2 of these laptops and certainly have no experience in changing a mobo - the part comes intact so all I have to do is change the entire bottom half of the laptop.

Hi Wingnut, thanks for the info. I thought it was the fan at first but you can clearly feel air coming out of the vents - unless it isn't working properly and should be blowing harder (i.e bent somehow after the fall it took). I booted up the TP (2645-45U) both with the batt pack and without and with the a/c and without and after the initial time/date error scrn and resetting that, the BIOs reads error 192. I did run the entire diagnostics and several errors came up only on the mobo check. Supplying the FRU # for me rocks! TY! If the CMOS cell doesn't fix the error, I will go ahead and look for a fan.

Will let you guys know what the results are when I install the new CMOS cell in a few days.

That may well have been me - the first time the CMOS battery on my 600 went out, I got the usual two error codes plus the 192 (fan). I've mentioned that occurence recently in at least one thread.

This is even mentioned in the 600/600E HMM:

Code 192 (Fan Error):

1. Measure the voltage of the backup battery. If the voltage is not correct, replace the backup battery.
2. Fan
3. System board

According to the HMM, the CMOS battery should read between 2.5 and 3.2V, BTW.

This only happened the first time my CMOS cell died - when that one died recently, I only got the errors about time/date and config not being set.

Actually, it was wingnuts problem that I was recalling....but now that you mention it, I do remember your problem as well...
