I just typed up my story, and it was far too long to expect anyone to read it. So I will try to make my story shorter
-keyboard, mouse, and touchpad were all replaced because sometimes they would work, sometimes they wouldnt
-AC input loosens up constantly to the point where it feels like it will fall off, this has also caused the AC cord to start to break, After explaining this to the tech they said it would be replaced (what they really did was tighten the screw, didnt fix the problem)
-LCD screen, has a flicker or glitch, rather annoying, and occasionally (once every week or two) will turn bright white or purple, with the laptop still running but the screen not working (tested this by send instant message)
They replaced the planar card once, with the keyboard to fix this problem, didnt work. Sent it in a second time, replaced the planar card again, and the day I received the machine back, it did the blank screen trick. and I was also now getting numerous frozen pixels that come and go all over my screen. At this point I NEEDED my laptop for law school applications, could not go without it so I waited a few weeks to send it in again. Was told by the tech they would replace the LCD, LCD ribbon cable, and the inverter since the planar card didnt help. Received the laptop back, planar card had been replaced nothing else, and to make me even happier, lenovo decided to send my machine back non functional. Windows wouldnt even load before the blue screen of death showed up.
Now I received my laptop back this week with the memory replaced, nothing else done. I have been lied to repeatedly about what will be done to my machine by lenovo, both regular techs and "team leaders" was told if this last repair didnt fix my problems I would be able to put in a complaint and request a replacement laptop. I know I will have the LCD issues again within the next week or two since they didnt replace anything. They are a nightmare to deal with, ignore everything that I say, and outright lie to me about what will be done to my machine. Ive asked to have my hd reimaged twice while it was sent in for work, after the first time it wasnt done I asked to speak to the supervisor aka "team leader" who assured me it would be reimaged, and wasnt a problem at all, and it was again not done. Im sick of dealing with the clowns in atlanta, as one of them told me today, they cant help me.
Sorry about the length, this is an extremely irritating issue, and like I said before, this is the short version.

I suppose your story confirms there's general problematic issues with the Z series laptop. You could either stick to a replacement Z laptop or ask if you could have a T series laptop.
In my opinion I think Z series laptop would dissapear very soon, T60 Widescreens will have in a matter of months the integrated web-cam, so I think Lenovo is trying to replace Z laptop with T models more oriented towards multimedia.

It would be a shame if Lenovo really did pull the plug on the z-series. I don't think the T-series needs a webcam IMHO. A more consumer-oriented widescreen notebook with webcam, multicard reader, firewire port, and lighter ABS frame is a nice model between the t and x series.
My current z61t runs fabulously and it's quiet unlike my last T43p.

i bought this z60 last march, so its a year old now. despite all the problems its had i do love the machine i just wish it had the "thinkpad reliability" that i bought it for. One of my friends is an it guy and he was telling me the other day the difference between ibm and lenovo production. He said they were moving shelves of computers and one of the ibms fell of, hit someone in the forehead and fell to the ground where it received a very large dent, worked perfectly. A lenovo built model fell from about 3 feet and shattered into pieces on impact...

I wonder why the A series were ditched (I believe they were replaced by the R series now), but there seems that Z series Thinkpad have a higher rate of failure (name freezes, BSOD's, etc).
I think in the next coming months we will be seeing 14.1" T60 WS (already confirmed) but the T series reliability would cause the Z series to dissapear.

an update to my situation, Im happy to say that after persistant calling and arguing I have finally gotten through to the right people, and I am getting a replacement laptop! Since they no longer make the z60t they will be sending me a z61t, upgrades all around as well, 1.5gb ram goes to 2gb ram, 2.0 pentium m to 2.0 core duo, 100gb hd to 120gb hd, 14 screen to 14.1 inch with built in camera, and everything else that I had on my original machine. Needless to say I am very happy that everything has worked out in the end.
To those of you who are also having a number of problems with your machines I recommend being persistent, thats what worked for me

boston guy,
glad to here that lenovo took care of you. it would have been better for their reputation if they took care of it in a more timely manner but... in anycase you got the replacement that you should have from the start.
i have a z61m 9451-5hk, only issue is palmrest creak after ram upgrade. but that's nothing... otherwise, i love this machine. (first thinkpad)
I have heard some complaints regarding fan noise. but that's after people upgraded their cpu from Core Duo to Core 2 Duo...
