Will this wifi-card work in a T23 or T30?

#1 Post by RealBlackStuff » Tue Mar 06, 2007 6:06 am

I can get my hands on this wifi-card:
Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Wireless LAN card. 802.11a/b/g standard. Model: WM3B2915ABG

Will it work in either (or both) a T23 or a T30?
Anybody know if this provokes an 1802/01c9 error or not?

Can't say anything about T30, but 2915 is the card I am using on my T23 and it works flawlessly, no errors. Plug and play.

Make sure the T23 in question is wireless-enabled model, otherwise you'll need to follow Ray's fantastic instructions to make it so.

It will work in the T23 but you will need to use the hack on the T30 if you want to use the card in it.

Musti, could you provide a link to Ray's 'Fantastic Instructions'?
I tried one of these 2915abg cards in my T23 and kept getting the 'Code 10' error. This doesn't have anything to do with the 1802 error, does it?

That is the card I have, though I've not yet put it in the T23. I tried to install it into my X30 which needed the 1802 work around, but once that was fixed, I also got the Code-10. As far as I know, the 2x series Thinkpads don't have the 1802 whitelist, but I really hope I don't encounter another code-10 "Device cannot start" error...

Looks like it's 50/50. Thanks for the votings.
I'll take my chance and pay the $20.75 incl. shipping off eBay.

I think he may have been referring to my site at:

http://www.rkawakami.net/ibm_t2x/t23_wireless/

The site does mention what type of card is being used. I prefer a Broadcom BCM94306-based card. I believe these were used by Dell and HP in many of their systems. I have installed them into T23s without any problems.

Thanks, Ray. Do you have an idea what the Code 10 error workaround would be? I can't find much info on the web, other than a driver problem or a bad card (which narrows it down!)

realblackstuff: Be sure to let us know how it goes with the card when you get it installed...will you be installing antennas as well?

I've sold my old 802.11b wifi-card for $20.- to a Want-It-Now buyer on eBay
Deduct that from the $20.75 for the new(used) card.
Means I got an 802.11a/b/g for the princely sum of $0.75!
(eat your heart out, Underclocker).

I already installed 2 ea. 75cm antennas (way too long, but they work) under the T23 keyboard/bezel. They worked fine with the Atheros card, which I now put in my T30 (with proper inbuilt antennas).
The above 802.11b (which originally came with my T30) worked OK in the T23 as well, but had only WEP security, so HAD to go.

Soon as I get the a/b/g card (from Australia), I'll put it in and report the results in this thread.

No idea what code 10 is, but this may help:

That is the wireless card I use in my T23 without problems. I never used the original one, took it out as soon as I got the T23 and installed the 2915ABG before I ever powered it up.

I get great reception and performance from the intel 2915ABG.

Do you have a wireless-enabled T23? Or have you installed your own antenna? I love the idea of internal, but I am not sure I want
to give up the range....

Does anyone have experience with an internal card, and using a flat antenna on the outside of the case?

My T23 is wireless enabled. I'm not sure what you would get if you ran your own wires, I had horrible luck with my dad's Compaq and internal wires with this same card.

Received the Intel 2915ABG today, DL'd the drivers from Intel, inserted the card in my T23, installed the drivers, and bingo... everything worked straight out of the box!
No nasty errors, no patches necessary.
I used the standard Windows XP-Pro utility, not the TP-CM or the Intel software (57MB).

For the benefit of any Googlers looking for an answer for the "Code 10" issue discussed above, I found the answer elsewhere in this very forum!

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=39253
Unfortunately that will not work for you, It is the 'a' band that is the problem. the updated bios made it posible to use B&G but not A. Can't think why. I needed A so went with a NON IBM version of the card, no problems apart from the fact that u I can't use Access Conections.
Essentially, the 2915ABG came in IBM-branded and basic Intel flavors - the Intels work fine and the IBMs give the Code-10.

I love this Forum!
