A rapid restore and recovery saga

#1 Post by elie » Tue Mar 06, 2007 4:59 pm

Hello everyone

I'd like to report my experience of upgrading my G41 hard-drive.

My G41 came with a 40GB 5400rpm harddrive, and I recently decided to upgrade it to a 60GB 7200rpm.

I surfed the web looking for possible options to allow me to avoid having to re-install my harddrive, but didn't find any solution that garanteed the process to be successfull.

I did however read on the IBM website that "Rapid Restore and Recovery" 'could' help when upgrading to a larger harddrive, but it was only implicitely stated, and didn't mention "HOW TO" achieve such a miracle.

So I made a backup of my harddrive to a USB drive, replaced the harddrive, and rebooted the system with the first of the 5 Recovery CDs I created after buying the system.

Re-installing the system went fairly smooth, and I went as far as successfully formatting the new C: drive.

At that point I had to options: 1) trying the restore-backup process to an empty drive, or 2) restore to factory settings.

I tried option 1, and it seems to work fine altough a bit slow, so I went to sleep and discovered the next morning that only 1% of my drive had been restored, I estimated the restore process to be working at a rate of 1kb/minute... it wasn't really a "Rapid Restore". I calculated that it would take a few months to complete so opted for option 2, and restored to factory settings.

I then had the possibility to try to restore the backup from the Windows interface, but it wouldn't find the backup on the USB drive, so I gave up and opted for the long way.

Does anyone know if it is actually possible to restore a backup of a 40GB drive to a 60GB drive on a thinkpad G41?

(It is now a bit late to ask that question, but it may be helpfull to others trying the same things)

Allo Elie.

I have used both True Image and the IBM R&R ways of doing backups and both worked fine for me. I would rather use TI as it is quite a bit quicker than R&R. why your backup could not be retreive is beyond me, You said that you did a BU but you do not say how this was done.

I also increased my HD from a low 20 g to a large 40 g.

JP.
Two Thinkpads G-41.
Thinkpad i Series 1200 and 3 1300.
Thinkpad 365 XD ( exchanged for a $100 rebate ).
All on WiFi and Ultra VNC. Have fun ! I do.
