T42 recovery Discs Confusion !

#1 Post by itsramesh » Wed Sep 22, 2004 1:18 pm

I bought a T42 (2378fvu) recently. I used the IBM Tools to create recovery discs and it made me burn 6+1 CDs.
But i also called IBM for recovery discs (hoping they would give me winXP cd) ... they sent me a set of only 4 recovery CDs.

I am confused about this. Are those two sets different? which ones should i use for a re-install?

It would have been a lot better had IBM given us the WinXP on one CD and other IBM drivers and applications on other CDs.
IBM Thinkpad T42 (2378FVU)
Pentium M 735 1.7 GHz
64MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 on 14.1" SXGA+
512 MB DDR RAM
40 GB 5400 rpm HDD
Intel pro 2200 b/g Wireless

"It would have been a lot better had IBM given us the WinXP on one CD ... "

Agreed: if we have to reinstall the system (& thus wipe out everything we had on disk anyway) why is it better to reinstall from harddisk? Well, granted, one could be on the road when that happens but still with out applications.

Having that hidden partition takes up unneeded space & funks up the disk a bit. Hey: after first turning on the machine & running the setup (it had to "convert from FAT to NTFS" file structure), disk showed high fragmentation.

Hope someone from IBM reads this forum.

I hear you. I am actually amazed that IBM doesn't send CDs with a 2000$ laptop!
My previous laptops were dell and HP. All of them came with OS CDs and drivers/applications separate. That way i could customize my computer as i wanted and not as the manufacturer wanted.
One more thing is i paid double the price (compared to my old dell and hp laptops) and this T42 has a dead pixel. never had those before!

Well anyway, any answer to my original question?

You don't need an installation disc to do a clean install!
Go to this thread...I mean read it all http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=3827
If you've upgraded to SP1 or SP2 it doesn't matter. From inside of windows, using your I386 folder and whichever Service Pack you have, you can make a Slip streamed (O.S. + Service Pack) bootable installation disc for Windows 2000 or Windows XP. I used the first process mentioned in the thread, but since then I've used the program mentioned in the thread called AutoStreamer which really simplifies things!
Good luck...it's really easy!

I have a solution for my original question.
It turns out that IBM had sent me the wrong batch of CDs.

For a T42 there should be 7 recovery discs.
No more confusion.
