ThinkVantage Panel Bulges on New T60WS

#1 Post by jeffm » Tue Mar 06, 2007 8:13 pm

I just got my new widescreen T60 (minutes ago). There's a very significant bulge between the ThinkVantage and power buttons. When I press the power button, the panel "mushes" into the laptop. The area between the panel and the screen is also bulged.

Any thoughts on how to fix this myself? I don't want to send this one back - I have the LG screen and it's fabulous.

So, after googling "Thinkpad HMM" and determining that HMM = Harware Maintenance Manual (thanks Temetka), I downloaded the HMM and followed the instructions for removing and replacing the keyboard bezel. This reduced the "significant bulge" to a slight bulge.

There were two things causing the bulge:

1) The 3 antenna wires on the wireless card were crammed together and sitting on top of another connector at the back of the system board. I re-routed them and that seems to have fixed the bulge between the power button and the thinkvantage button. Although the panel still flexes a lot.

2) The keyboard bezel tabs around the LCD cable were not inserted into their slots. I put them in, but that did not completely fix the bulge. I believe the bezel is permanently warped because of the improper assembly. However, it's not very noticeable. If it starts to bother me, I'll just order a new one.

Time to make some recovery disks and install Vista....
