What's weird Dan? The sketch or the fact that someone is sleeping on the subway?dsigma6 wrote:There's a nice one of a guy sleeping on the train...that's weird!
Sleeping is probably the second most common thing to do on the subway, preceded only by reading a newspaper. Preventing eye contact is paramount.
I used to look forward to my daily run from Wall St. up to Columbia law just for the opportunity to grab some much needed shuteye.

You remind me of the reaction I'd most commonly receive when I pulled my trusty camera out to take photos of the holds of vessels as they arrived in Philly after we'd received notice of in-transit damage to cargo.dsigma6 wrote:Well, something would happen.
The longshoremen working the hatch usually took a dim view of having their pictures taken for posterity and my arrival would often be greeted with curses, threats of violence and the odd scrap of dunnage sailing past my head.
As bad as the stevedoring gangs in Philly were, the gangs in Wilmington were much worse, to the point that I had all four tires flattened on my car and the windshield broken. The stevedoring company wound up making good on repairs, against their will, and there was never a repetition of the "misunderstanding".
Seeing people sketching on the subway in NYC all depended on how close you were to The New School or NYU, two hotbeds for the arts.

For taking pictures? Sheesh. I was thinking more along the line of gouging an eye out...but to mess with another mans car? Sacrosanct!JHEM wrote:all four tires flattened on my car and the windshield broken.

A great number of people with outstanding warrants can be found working in the holds of ships!
It was Wilmington Dan, so we're discussing barbarians.dsigma6 wrote:I was thinking more along the line of gouging an eye out...but to mess with another mans car? Sacrosanct!
Oddly, vehicles were inviolable within a block or so of the terminals in Camden. You could park anywhere on the streets around the terminals in the full and certain knowledge that your vehicle would be untouched on your return during daylight. But, one took every step necessary to not see the sun go down in Camden.
The terminal Boss, named Vincent with a last name ending in a vowel, had explained to me once that he put a great deal of effort into educating the locals when he first arrived that it would be best for all involved if the terminal areas were considered off-limits to the general criminal element except for certain "ships' crews servicing" operations.

Interesting to hear the arrangements dealing with criminal activity! I got stranded in Camden after a concert in August, as my car battery decided then and there was a good time to die. I waited outside of my car with a baseball in one hand, and a cache of knives on my person and in the car. I watched numerous posse's walk by, and luckily no one gave my white a$$ any trouble.
I've never had such an uneasy feeling as when I saw the last cop, located 2 blocks away, drive off into the darkness.

I love the NY subways, especially seeing the rats darting back and forth across the tracks - they actually learn not to touch them.

Hopefully not at one of the hotsheet, no-tell Motels on Admiral Wilson Boulevard!
All of which, BTW, met their demise at the hands of "urban beautification" (along with all the strip clubs) just prior to the republican national convention being held in Philly.
Many of the delegates were forced to stay at hotels and motels on the Jersey side during the convention and the state R committee (NJ) didn't want to offend the sensibilities of Maw and Paw Average from East Rooster's Perch as they traveled to the convention center and back every day.

I've been to Camden too! Once. For about 3 minutesdsigma6 wrote:I got stranded in Camden... <snip>
Took a wrong turn trying to leave Philly and wound up going over a bridge into Jersey. Wife pointed out my mistake and we quickly made a U-turn and proceeded back to PA.

No, not willingly James, we too were forced to stay in Jersey when we were doing business in Philly; there was a huge convention in Philly and all the hotels were full- and well we were forced to stay where we could get rooms (understand we'd never been to Camden before). Thankfully we were only there for two nights and only for about 6 hours each night.JHEM wrote:Willingly???Purcy wrote: Yup, been there, stayed there![]()
