How much Thermal Grease should I put on ?

#1 Post by arthurcorell » Thu Mar 08, 2007 1:24 pm

I just received the heatsink and thermal grease from Lenovo this morning.

Can anyone tell me how much should I put on ?

Before I put the heatsink in, should I apply some on it too or just one the processor ?

As you know, Lenovo put a lot on the processor not like we said a thin layer for "Arctic Silver 5".

Thanks

JUST enough to cover the top of the CPU fully (like 0.1mm in height).
Custom T60p
2.33GHz 4MB 667MHz Core 2 Duo
4GB PC2-5300 DDR SDRAM
Bluetooth / Atheros ABGN
200GB 7k200 7200RPM Hard Drive
8X DVD Multiburner
15" UXGA - ATI FireGL V5250 (256MB)

Applying a lot of thermal grease on the CPU is not going to work that well after all. Just clean out the old thermal grease and apply a thin layer of grease on the cpu and use a card edge to spread the grease evenly on the cpu (just like what you will do when you are spreading butter on your bread).

I *do* remember that there is a video footage on how to change thermal grease in youtube...

Well you know what they say:

If a little works good, then put the whole tub on. Make sure it gooshes out the sides as well so it can form a nice thermal barrier.

Kidding.

Please don't do that, mmmkay?

Just a dab 'll do ya. Nice thin even coat.
