Installing Win 98SE over Win 2000 Pro
Installing Win 98SE over Win 2000 Pro
I thought I'd upgrade my Win 98SE with Win 2000 Pro.
Was successful with the install but now programs seem to take longer to load and the ThinkPad 770's HD makes a clicking sound as it runs. Can I reintsall my Win 98SE upgrade now?
Thank you,
Stephen

There is one important observation to make: Windows 98 can ONLY run from the FIRST partition on a PC (which is normally C: ), and that partition must be formatted in FAT32. W98 has a limit of 4GB, W98SE has not.
You could make your laptop dual-boot, with the first partition in FAT32 for W98/SE, and the second in e.g. NTFS for W2K or XP. If you want to access the W2K/XP data from within W98, you should format the W2K/XP partition also in FAT32, otherwise W98 can NOT read it.
The other way around (W2K/XP-->W98) is never a problem.
Anybody who wants to UPdate should know, that this only goes in one direction, from OLDEST OS to NEWEST OS. You may skip OSes forward but you can NOT go backwards.
W95 - W98 - W98SE - W2K - ME - XP - W2K3 - Vista

When you install a second (or third or fourth..) OS, it will automatically generate a boot-menu, from which you can select at starting the PC/laptop.
In W2K or XP this info is stored in c:\boot.ini

Partition Magic is the most widely used I think.
To avoid problems, it is imperative that you hit the APPLY button after EVERY action you want to take in PM.
I've used PM v8.0 for years now without ever any problems.
