Lenovo hit with lawsuit by 3M

Triangle Business Journal - 4:56 PM EST Thursday, March 8, 2007

Chinese computer manufacturer Lenovo Group has been named in a lawsuit alleging that the company violated patents owned by plaintiff 3M Co.

3M announced Thursday that it is suing both Lenovo, which has its U.S. headquarters in Morrisville, and Sony Corp., alleging the companies violated two patents related to lithium-ion battery technology, according to court documents.

Maplewood, Minn.-based 3M (NYSE: MMM) filed a suit Wednesday in the U.S. District Court of Minnesota. The suit says several large companies violated patents related to the composition of the cathode, or positive electrode, used in lithium-ion batteries they manufactured, imported or sold in the United States. Companies named in the suit include Sony, Lenovo, M a t s u s h i t a Industrial Electric Co. Ltd., Panasonic Corp. of North America, Hitachi and CDW Corp.

In its complaint, 3M said, "3M has suffered, and will continue to suffer, irreparable injury and damages". 3M wants an injunction prohibiting the companies from infringing its battery patents. It also seeks unspecified financial damages.

Yeah right. #m is just [censored] off that other companies are using their ideas. I understand th need for patents, but I think large corporations should not be eligeable for such things. Just giving a big company a patent just causes bigger problems down the road. Patents are made for inventors, not corporations Now ask yourself the question, who gives out a patent on a battery?
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

I am sure that Sony Corp. would love to "share" some of their battery spoils with 3M. :P
