Re: USB DVD Drive for X40 ?
Not that I know. Get an IBM Portable Drive Bay 2000 from Ebay and an Ultrabay 2000 DVD drive (from Ebay too). I use it with my TransNote. It has both USB and PCMCIA connectivity. Or just find a non-IBM portable DVD drive.

Is this it?

IBM is also supposed to have just a CD reader version and also a DVD burner version.
Also, will ANY USB external drive work, or does it have to have its own power, or plug in, if it is not the above IBM model??
My problem with getting the one in the link above, is that it is very slow at 8X CD-RW speed.

I have that one. It's nice and light and comes in a very small carrying case that you can fit the cables into. However, sometimes it just isn't recognized as a drive and you have to fiddle with it for a little to get it to register on the system.aamsel wrote:Is this it?

I got this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 30684&rd=1
It's very small and light, and the X40 can boot from it. It's kinda cheaply made but it's a Toshiba slim drive inside.
Like I said, the X40 can boot from it and it seems to read DVD's just fine...

I use one of these for setting up clients' X machines: http://www.micro-solutions.com/products ... 212010.asp
I also have one of these: http://www.micro-solutions.com/products ... 210010.asp
As well as one of these: http://www.targus.com/us/product_details.asp?sku=NW930U with the USB cable as well as the PC card connecter.
They all work well and the X machines will BOOT from them.
Regards,
James

There are slim, notebook sized, USB 2.0 DVD burners that can be had for $130.

Here is a review:

I have one and it works great with my X40. Saves about $300 off IBM's multiburner, which is just a little smaller, but waaay too expensive.

IBM's multiburner runs off the X40 but only if you connect two USB ports simultaneously and only in DVD read mode. If you want to write on the IBM multiburner, you need to connect the power adapter anyway.

Power Supply
Do all these drives need an external power supply or do they use USB power ?
It would be fine to have a self working / self powering drive (juste an USB cable...).

Re: Power Supply
X40 does have the extra power plug thingie so at least big blue's own drive should work using that ie w/o external ac adapter.cybertof wrote:Do all these drives need an external power supply or do they use USB power ?

Found another one which appears to run off USB power alone, but is quite expensive.

Difficulty still seems to be to find
1. Cheap
2. Fast (4x) Writer
3. Self Powered
