External enclosure for Ultrabay Slim drive?
External enclosure for Ultrabay Slim drive?
I swapped out my Ultrabay Slim DVD Multi Recorder (39T2507 / 39T2570) in my T42 for an internal hard drive to get all that extra space, and now I'd like to get an external enclosure so I can use the DVD writer when I occasionally need it. What are my options? Does IBM make such a think? Thanks
Re: External enclosure for Ultrabay Slim drive?
No.
The connector on the back of the ultrabay slim DVD writer is proprietary and it will be more trouble than it is worth to try to get it to work in some other box or externally.
If you really are sure you are not going to use the burner in the thinkpad again, you would be better off selling the burner and replacing it with a USB2 external burner, either full size or slim size, depending on whether you plan to lug it around or use it in just one place. The full size ones are both faster and cheaper. The price of these external burners has come down a lot in the last year or two, or you could make your own by buying an external box (full size or slim size) with an appropriate drive.

It would be a nice option for Lenovo to sell.. I know Dell sells something similar for their D-series laptops as well as a cable that served a similar function but just for the floppy drive on the C-series.

Well yeah.. dell does it over a sorta proprietary plug where it uses a USB port and some thing underneath it that sorta looks like USB but isn't. It's something Lenovo would have had to design for, otherwise there would have to be onboard circuitry on the external adapter to convert the devices to USB.danage wrote:yes but where would you connect it? you can get a slimline usb drive for cheap if you were looking for that?
