problem upgrading to Vista

#1 Post by yhzs » Mon Mar 12, 2007 4:15 pm

Just wonder if anybody has successfully upgraded from XP to Vista.

I have a T60p and I was trying upgrade jit from XP professional to Vista business edition. Before the upgrade, I followed the instructions on the Lenovo site and installed a new bios and uninstalled a few 3rd party apps/drivers. During my first attempt, the upgrade failed because the SATA driver came with Vista could not be installed on my laptop, so I installed the new Intel Matrix Manager directly which is Vista compatible. The second attempt also failed and it was because an error during the installation of the IO controller. The error log contains the following errors:

Has anybody run into similar issues? Does anybody know what the problem might be?

Thanks!

It is strongly recommended to do a clean install not an upgrade.

Too many issues in upgrading even if you use the Upgrade Check tool.

After attempting more than a dozen Vista upgrades with a 50% success rate, I now do clean installs. Works everytime and is much quicker.

If you need to transfer settings use the Migration Wizard and don't forget to backup.

I'll second that. I just finished a clean install of Vista a few days ago. It went very smooth.

A question ...

Pardon my ignorance, but can somebody tell me what, exactly, constitutes a "CLEAN INSTALL"?

I got a free Vista Ultimate at a launch event, along with Office 2007. The latter I have installed and it is working fine.

Since HP has now prepared a driver for my Photosmart C6180 All-In-One, I am ready to install Vista.

But I am apprehensive in light of some of the stuff I've read here. I have no idea whether I will be getting a "CLEAN INSTALL" or not - whatever that is!

clean install means.......format then install, not a upgrade from xp to vist or what-have-we. best bet is to backup all docs, media, bookmarks and whatever else you may have that is irreplaceable and and just start from a freshly formatted disk

Re: Fresh Install

I am a bit fuzzy also.

Can you do a clean install of the OS only and keep all the drivers and preload SW or do you have to start at ground Zero.

Would be awsome if someone could list "all" the steps 1- XX

I will then take that data and create a new thread called how to do a fresh install - or maybe you can take the lead!?

I would appreciate that also!

And (if I may plaintively request) in plain English for non-experts to understand ... assuming very little expertise!)

For example ... does doing a "clean install" mean you have to delete Windows XP first, in its entirety?

This site has a step-by-step:

http://www.windowsvista.windowsreinstal ... newhdd.htm

The only thing I did differently was during the harddrive setup. Instead of selecting New, I just selected the existing partition and then selected Format.

Before you begin, make a set (or two) of rescue and recovery disks:

JeffM - Thanks!

Now we just need a primer on re-installing pre loaded software, drivers etc i.e. any gotchas... I have seen alot of post where people did fresh install and later had issues to work thru.

So, it looks like we are reformatting entire HD so everything has to be re-installed. Does this also write over preloaded sw TP's store on the HD? I once reformatted my T40 and was able to reload preloaded sw from the a space on the hd that kept these files?

And whats the best way to use transfer settings? Never done it.

This process won't remove the pre-loaded partition. You'll have to do that manually if you want to recover the space. Someone here mentioned using a boot disk (gparted?) for that, but I haven't tried it yet.

I have a list of all the TP software I reinstalled, but I didn't keep tight track of the order I installed them in. I could post it, but I wouldn't want to mislead anyone, and I did not re-install everything that was available.

I've never used transfer settings so I can't help there.
